Pho Ga 88, 1719 Decoto Rd, Union City, CA 94587
This is a small, newish Vietnamese pho ga/chicken restaurant. The only protein they serve is chicken (though I’m not sure what they put in their won tons). They use fresh, never frozen chicken and grandma’s recipes. The menu only has a few options, chicken noodles with different types of noodles, chopped or boneless chicken, chicken & rice, won tons, egg rolls, Vietnamese drinks, and desserts.
Pho ga ($13.50): thin, flat pho rice noodles (cooked well, not mushy or clumped together) in a light broth, chopped chicken (skin on) pieces, scallions, a housemade ginger & scallion sauce served on the side. Everything was really good. I liked their sauce, the broth (pretty flavorful, not salty), and tender chicken. The chicken is very bony/thin. There isn’t much meat (poor skinny chickens). Also, the way they chop the chicken leaves bone fragments, so eat the chicken with care. The chicken had a bright yellow skin, brighter than the kind you usually see.
Soymilk: sweetened, made to order possibly, thicker, very nice
Wings & rice ($13.99): The wings seem to come from a different chicken than the one served in the pho ga. The wings are larger and meatier. They seemed a bit tough. My father said it was like eating turkey wings. The wings were served with a big mound of steamed white rice topped with a fried egg, one fried egg roll, lettuce, cucumber, and pickled daikon and carrot. It also came with a bowl of clear chicken broth and two sauces (scallion & ginger, sweet chili).
The pho arrived right away. The wings took much longer.
Online ordering is available or you can call and place your order.
The space is older but they made it homey with bright yellow walls and funny signs about chickens. Service was friendly. They close early (at 8 PM).
