SCOWLING in the sunshine That was Princess Caroline of Monaco yesterday on the eve of her wedding.

The 21-year-old Princess looked distinctly miserable as she arrived at a star-studded Riviera garden party held for guests who will attend her marriage today to businessman Philippe Junot, 38. Her husband-to-be seemed equally displeased. But by the time the Princess got to a ball in Monaco's palace last night, she actually looked happy.

THE PARTY’S JUST BEGUN

A LOUD metal-ripping crunch yesterday heralded the start of festivities to mark the wedding of Monaco’s Princess Caroline.

It was the noise of the Hollywood set showing that they sure know how to have a smashing time.

Gregory Peck was chauffeuring Frank Sinatra to a private pre-wedding lunch party thrown by David Niven when he mistakenly put his Mercedes into reverse and crashed into the front of Cary Grant’s car.

The crunch came right outside the front door of David Niven’s luxurious villa at Cap Ferrat on the French Riviera.

“Guess I got the gears mixed up,” Peck explained, following Ol’ Blue Eyes Sinatra and wife Barbara into the villa.

The glittering champagne-and salmon lunch for fifty guests, was held in the flower-filled garden where Sinatra unexpectedly sang “My Way” to Caroline.

It was the first of a series of public and private celebrations marking the civil marriage today - a religious ceremony follows tomorrow - of the 21-year-old princess to 38-year-old financier Philippe Jonot.

But, although the lunch was a highly successful affair, Princess Caroline looked plainly miserable on the eve of her wedding. She scowled at photographers.

And Junot snapped angrily at cameramen.

By contrast, his future mother-in-law, Princess Grace, was all smiles. And even her tubby husband, Prince Rainier, managed a grudging smile.

Last night, 800 guests including Sinatra and his ex-wife, Ava Gardner, attended a sumptuous ball in Monaco’s royal palace.

And Caroline, finally looking happy, wore her mother’s best tiara.

GRACE HAS IT TAPED

FILMING for the Monaco spectacular has already begun.

Princess Grace put the wedding party through their paces yesterday with the fussiness one would expect of a former Hollywood queen.

While she directed rehearsals, Prince Rainier shot every move with his video tape camera.

His films are being used to pick up flaws in performance and timing. The family have even sought the technical advice of film star David Niven in their quest for perfection.
