The yellow-orange glow of the parking lot lights greeted Peter as he left Caldwell. Normally he would never have been on campus this late (he would have been home helping Aunt May around the house or perhaps running the rooftops looking for trouble), but seeing as he had turned in 3 late papers in a row, he had been putting in some extra hours at the lab to make up lost points. The sky was clear and the weather was warm - a sure sign that summer was on its way in, and all of the criminals were waking up from hibernation.
A voicemail from Aunt May explained that she was going to be picking up an extra shift at the hospital tonight; she wouldn't be home until the early hours of the morning. After stowing his pack and climbing to his favorite perch, Peter pulled on his mask and made the transition from awkward, nerdy Peter Parker into awkward, heroic Spiderman. Now it was time to wait. Pete sat there, legs dangling over the side of the building, watching the flickering lights of the city. Everything moved together, a steady rhythm, as if the city was breathing. Yeah, breathing exhaust fumes... Typically, Peter felt most at ease behind the mask. He was so ready to throw himself into the insanity that the city had to offer as if it offered himself some sort of strange clarity. Recently, however, he found himself thinking of Gwen and the girl, Riley, he had met on campus. He hated it. He hated not being able to shake himself from this weird, lovesick funk. In order to combat these feelings, he tried to convince himself it would be easier if he could just fight more crime, stop more bullies. He knew it sounded stupid, but he just needed to right some wrongs in the world.

Peter gets heartbroken as Gwen moves away, unable to stand the sight of Peter when she knows that they can't end well together
