Peter Mayhew was a British-American actor who is best known for playing Chewbacca in the Star Wars series. When casting for Star Wars (1977), George Lucas wanted a tall actor to play Chewbacca. Mayhew was working at a hospital when he was cast for the role. Lucas described Mayhew as ‘Big heart, gentle nature and I learned to always let him win’. He played Chewbacca in five Star Wars films as well as for TV specials and for charity work.
Mayhew was born in Barnes, Surrey, England, and was diagnosed with gigantism aged 8, he was 7 feet 3 inches as an adult. He was married and lived in Boyd, Texas after becoming an American citizen in 2005. He wrote two books, Growing Up Giant and My Favorite Giant.
Mayhew underwent double knee replacement surgery in 2013 and was confined to a wheelchair and in 2015 went into hospital for pneumonia. In 2018, he underwent spinal surgery to improve his mobility. He died of a heart attack in 2019, aged 74 in Texas.
