This extraordinarily clever Pixar animated movie takes an ancient premise and does wonderful things with it. Though it purports to be a whimsical treatment of modern psychological theories about the role of emotions in the formation of personality, itβs a kind of moral allegory, not unlike the moral fables of all eras, including John BunyanβsΒ Pilgrimβs Progress. Riley and her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan) have moved to San Francisco from Minnesota. The shock of adjusting to a new home and a new school plunges Riley into misery, made worse by her remembrances of the happy times when she felt secure, had friends, and was a star on her hockey team. Her emotions β Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) β lose control of her personality, and things begin to fall apart. Itβs an astute and original (despite its ancient precedents) look at the way we learn to face life, brilliantly animated and skillfully voiced by a great cast.

Disney Pixarβs BeFri Was Reportedly Scrapped After Years in Development.
Pete Docter has thoroughly disappointed me, which I didn't think was possible. He used to have the opposite view of universality in stories. In recent years, filmmakers at Pixar have started with a personal story and dressed it up in fantasy. This pivot to making movies that are universal doesn't make sense. At all. Stories are supposed to be specific. Having an attitude of appealing to a broad audience just dilutes the story. You begin with something specific, and it can be relatable to anyone. And it's clear that he really wants to just make movies for affluent or middle class white American audiences. What relatable themes are there for people living in the global south? Or those toiling in poverty?
