This is a short, but very very sweet Kiturge fic, which I would recommend for someone who is seeking to read fluff and gain comfort through fic. It does contain a touch of angst, due to it showing off a small bit of the pair having body dysmorphia, and briefly touches upon Surge and Kit's shared past with Dr. Starline. However, this touch of angst serves to make the sheer domestic fluff of this fic that much sweeter. I would very honestly categorize this fic under "To read if you'd like to read about characters outside the gender bindary being allowed comfort and happiness".
The setting this fic presents seems to be post the fall of the Restoration in IDW Sonic, where Surge and Kit share bunk beds in their new apartment in the city. While it is, on the surface, a fic about a tenrec and his fox winding down to sleep, every line and detail betrays the emotion and care the author put into this fic. Just by reading, one can tell that they have thought a lot about Kit and Surge, their likes and dislikes, how their lives have been thus far (taking the author's personal headcanons into account), and how they interact with and feel about each other. By the time you finish reading, there will be no question in your mind that these two love each other dearly. This also isn't to mention how refreshing it is whenever I get the chance to read fics like this one, where the characters are casually trans/genderqueer. I also happen to like this headcanon of she/he pronouns Surge and They/He pronouns Kit, along with them having semi complicated relationships to their bodies and gender. To me as well, this fic is also one of those rare finds where two "rough around the edges" characters are able to live a domestic life together without this compromising their personalities. I never once felt while reading like the author needed to shave off their points or sand off their rough edges to give them a believable domestic life.
I am not even a little bit kidding when I say that it is probably one of the best (and one of my favorite) Kiturge fics I have read thus far.

Any time they sit down anywhere, Kit sits right on Surge's lap and gives everyone the death stare. Surge always has a hand on one of Kit's thighs. Eating? In a meeting? Doesn’t matter
When they're some place like the restoration building or in an alley near people they know (Sonic's friends), Surge should pull Kit aside just out of sight and start making out with Drippy sloppily, just loud enough for people to hear.
While stuck in a conversation she doesn't want to be in, Surge occasionally just choosing to snap her fingers and loudly tell Kit that they're leaving. Kit wraps his hydro coils around her (tenderly) and airlifts them both out in style
Neither Surge nor Kit taking no for an answer when people try to separate them (because they're a package deal!), no matter what they have to do to get their way
I need someone like Vector to point at their asses in public and go "is that allowed??" only for someone to tell him "just ignore them. They're just like that. If you point it out it'll only get worse"
They should flex on Sonic about how much better partners they are than him and Tails, just to get under his skin
This is just a short and sweet ficlet. It's not exactly overly romantic for Valintine's day or anything. Just something short and sweet. It can be read as either platonic or romantic.

Characters: Surge and Kitsunami
The air was filled with a faint, but persistent buzzing. Although, Surge wasn’t exactly sure where the buzzing came from. The distant chatter of chao and sounds of a space battle that played from the TV in front of her was the most reasonable culprit in most eyes, it was only one of the two possibilities to her. The alternative being the ever-present current rushing through her veins, coiling around her bones, and arcing through her muscular structure. Crafting a hum that never really seemed to cease, much like a constant sense of tinnitus, or the faint ringing of ears when they mistake silence for sound. Something she only knew of thanks to her partner’s constant complaining when he was left in pure silence for any period of time.
Her partner, a teal fennec fox by the name of Kitsunami, pressed his head against her thighs. His breathing was slow and steady, the expected result of his slumber. She would be envious if it was a normal nap that the fox had stolen in the late hours of the night for his own sake. Surge was sure that she would envy the fennec fox’s ability to sleep if it wasn’t the twelfth hour he had been asleep, and she wasn’t on her forty-nineth hour.
Sure, if this was something new, he would’ve been worried. But he was used to these sudden episodes of deep sleep, and Kitsunami was hardly the only one suffering from an unusual sleeping disorder. Surge himself couldn’t sleep for long periods of time regardless of his best attempts, often going days or weeks without anything longer than 3 hours of sleep. He wasn’t really concerned about it though. Due to the way his body buzzed with electricity at all hours of the day, the tenrec rarely felt tired. Much less exhausted, even after an especially long run.
The whimper caught his attention first. It was quiet and muffled from the fact that Kit’s mouth was practically glued shut. But the sound was enough to draw his attention to the quickening pace of breaths and the scrunched nose. The faint twitches of their tail are what solidified it as not a passing snarl or light spook.
‘Another one…’ A deep sigh fell from Surge’s lips as she lifted her hand from the hip it rested upon. Sitting up straighter for a moment, the tenrec’s fingers wrapped around the silver ring on her first digit. Slipping it off with ease and following to the other digit adorned with a silver ring. The feeling of static charge starting to build up in her hand was…uncomfortable, but a necessary evil. Bringing her now baren hand to rest on top of Kit’s head, the tenrec’s white gloved hands carded through the teal fur.
‘I wonder what Drippy is so troubled by…’ Working her fingers through small knots and snags, Surge eased into the motions as much as Kitsunami did. Their breathing slowed and their muscles relaxed. A soft smile made its way onto the tenrec’s peach-colored lips. Moving his eyes from the fox’s face, the tenrec elected to lean his head back and stare at the ceiling. The simple and repetitive motion lulled her to sleep as much as it was putting her partner at ease.
Fluttering closed, Surge felt her whole back relax as her head lulled to the side. The chatter from the TV fading into that ever-persistent hum that she called silence. Shapes and colors slowly appearing as all feeling in her limbs seemed to ebb away into pure nothingness. Not even noticing the moment her fingers had stilled and the faint stirring of her partner. Succumbing to sleep effortlessly for once and for all as a soft brush of fur pressed against her cheek.
Okay, so I wasn't considering it until #76 confirmed the disbanding of the diamond cutters and that the main center of the restoration needs rebuilding, but this really means that Surge and Kit's apartment from the 2024 annual is actually a new room?
Compare their room in the restoration from Sonic the Hedgehog issue #69 and the 2024 Annual.
The light levels of the two rooms aside, the "curtain" in the first image being a single panel, while the one in the second image is two. The room on the right is visibly smaller, with the bunk bed perpendicular to the wall, versus the one on the left being parallel. There are visible differences in the bunk bed frames and bedding. There's a lack of a glass coffee table in the restoration bedroom on the left. Etc etc.
While we know via #76 that there are other branches of the restoration, so it's not impossible that Surge and Kit ran there for support, given how distanced they've been from Restoration affairs since #75 I'd almost endeavor to say that their apartment from the annual is theirs.
As in...I don't know how they'd get the money for it for sure (maybe Kitsunami does odd jobs for cash when there's no hero work to be done?), but they really may have ponied up and gotten themselves their own apartment to live in in the city. Honestly no matter which is the case probably the sweetest thing to me is that they continue to choose to live together and sleep in bunk beds despite how small the room is. They...really don't want to leave each other's sides, do they?
One day I hope people realize that Kitsunami already "broke through his programming" back by issue #56 of Idw Sonic
He had an entire mini arc where he dealt with being without Surge for the first time, and in the real world. He met Sonic and his friends directly, tried to work out what his purpose would be without Surge in his life (gave it a shot trying to devote himself to Sonic, seeing him as the next best thing after Surge). And when it was all said and done, he decided after experiencing more that at Surge's side is where he wanted to be.
As of the recent IDW issues, Kit isn't sticking with Surge "because of programming" and "because he just needs for other characters to friend him and turn him into a better person". He is at her side because he wants to be. He protects her and aids her because he cares about her, not just because he's serving the strongest guy in the room. And he's not interacting with others because he's decided not to give a shit about anyone else other than Surge (because from his pov, even the "good guys" are fake. From his pov, everyone is someone trying to lie and manipulate their way into pulling him and Surge to their side)
Kit already has decided what he wants to do with his life. And he decided it on his own. Not because of anyone else's wants or wishes. That's the whole point of his speech at the end of #56.
He's burying whatever his and Surge's past is and moving forward with his conviction to be with Surge because it's what he wants.

The background would be simple. Due to Dream eater pets being crafted by someone, Kit could simply be Surge's Dream eater because Starline deemed her to need one. Although I don't mind him being a Chirithy either, I think a funny little pet as being his base is just too perfect!!
Evan was based for this actually. I might have a lot on my plate already, but mayhaps I Shall add Surge to Forces. Would improve the bare bones plot, AND be funny.
