Rachel is made the Oracle and can never have romantic relationships with anyone. After TLO, the friendship that she and Percy developed over what he thought was his last year alive was thrown out the window.

Calypso is trapped on Ogygia, but Percy ensures her release. Until that’s retconned in HOO, anyway, in a move that makes Percy look like a dick and utterly defangs oaths on the Styx. Not to mention, Calypso “cursing” Annabeth (even though it wasn’t intentional or even conscious), and then being given to Leo to ruin his character arc for good measure.

Reyna isn’t even given a chance; her advances are openly rejected by Percy, which is a rarity, and she’s later made a Hunter for good measure.

Nico, despite the years Percy spent worrying about him, searching for him, and then spending time with him, is now treated like a stranger by Percy, even though TLO left them off as good, even best, friends. To add insult to injury, Nico’s “confession” to Percy is, frankly, insulting and played for laughs, and post-HOO he’s given a new boyfriend he has spoken maybe one sentence to beforehand.

And it’s not even just canon love interests either; anyone who even has the potential of an interesting romance with Percy is pushed aside:

Thalia? She’s a hunter now.

Bianca? Hunter; also she’s killed off the chapter after she and Percy form a solid bond.

Any of the Seven post-SON? Percy only has eyes for Annabeth.

Clarisse? Random new boyfriend.

Grover? Random new girlfriend.

We have Percabeth post HOO, post Tartarus. Percy is feeling depressed and isolated. His once strong relationships like with Rachel, Grover and Nico feel distant. Annabeth's friends think he's a loser. Things with Annabeth feel tense after Akyls, and he feels lost about where he is heading in life.

Then he and Annabeth (or maybe just Percy alone) start having these dreams at night...

The first dream...he and Rachel were together. Having a picnic in Central Park. Like his first date with Annabeth. But whereas Annabeth was disappointed and wanted more, Rachel was elated. He watched Rachel offer to take him on a boat trip for their anniversary and wondered why Annabeth never planned any special dates for him.

The second dream...he and Calypso were on the island. Them lying on the sand under the stars, murmuring about the constellations. Percy telling her everything about the modern world while she regaled with tales of old. Percy teaching her how to bake blue food and Calypso patiently teaching him how to plant. His greatest what if. A life away from the demands of gods. Percy longed for that kind of peace and gentleness with Annabeth.

The third dream...he and Reyna ruled Camp Jupiter together as co-praetors. They looked at each other with tremendous mutual respect. Reyna was strong without being frightening; the other Percy never worried that her anger would lead to physical blows. Reyna and him bearing the weight of leadership together as equals. Them sharing their vulnerabilities in the quiet of their office, holding each other up. Percy wondered when he ever confided his deepest fears and hurts to Annabeth...why was he always the emotional support?

The fourth dream...Percy's eyes widened to see him and Nico. In Tartarus. Percy choking Akyls, the haunting fear turned rage making his eyes glow poisonous green. Nico crawling over, his own broken eyes barely holding together, and hugging Percy. Nico telling him they're safe now, he would be with Percy in the dark, that he loves him. Percy sobbing ugly tears and Nico holding him like a lifeline. Nico cracking a weak joke about Percy having way too many powers and Percy laughing uncontrollably, crying again but with less pain. This was so unfair. So unfair that Percy's wise girl saw him as an unnatural freak of nature to be restrained.

I remember ethan now. Why is bro so edgy and why is he literally in love with percy omfg. I'm a percethan enthusiast now

I was so percabeth deprived in this book the only moment we got was them kissing and right before percy went into the room where luke and ethan were when they were being cute and protective smh. but I was fed in the perachel and percico department so I'm grateful for that

Everytime I think about Calypso and Percy in that rewrite I scream a little bit okay I love them they hurt me.

For context she's in Alaska when Percy arrives with Hazel and Frank because she wanted to be away from the gods. And she helps them but OF COURSE Percy doesn't recognize her and there she acts a bit like she is in HoO, where she's kinda spiteful because is that boy being fucking for real? It has been a few years but STILL, how could he forget? And then she learns Percy is amnesic and she apologies. Percy is very confused because he actually LIKES her and he can tell she likes him too but she keeps pushing him away for some reason.

(Btw in the rewrite Percy's only memory of Annabeth is the one that linked him to the human world when he was in the Styx... She's fifteen in that memory and Percy is nineteen going on twenty in the rewrite, he doesn't think for a second that she might be his girlfriend. Percy went through the same god-induced amnesia as Jason, him getting his memories back so easily when Jason never didn't make a lot of sense to me.)

After Percy tells her he doesn't understand anything and is sick of no one telling him stuff and not being able to act as he wants because he has to think about what some past-him he doesn't remember being would do, she tells him "Just know someone's waiting for you, and you always wanted to go back to her".

Percy thinks about others and his loved ones first. Once he understands he has a whole ass girlfriend, he immediately backs the fuck down and feels bad for having a short-lived crush for Calypso. I do think he understands he has met Calypso before even though he doesn't ask much questions because she's obviously very hurt by that meeting (Percy originally thinks he has physically hurt her as she presents herself as a gods hater abd he was supposed to be some gods savior, a Hero of Olympus you might say).

Knowing this unknown person is expecting him to come back home also keeps him going in his darkest moment. He knows he can't fail her. He doesn't know who she is, but he just knows he has to get back to her.

(While I do like Percy remembering Annabeth and think it's really sweet, I think I prefer him having no idea who this unknown lover looking/waiting for him is and still doing his everything to find them again.)

it kind of reminds me of Frazeleo. Love triangle where person A likes both person C and B so they just say fuck it and polyamory and then C and B still kind of hate each other until they sniff each other through the door and they get closer and then yaayayayay everyone’s in love

oh and then Nico is just there because why not. Just Percy and his girlfriends and their little bisexual thingie and then Nico is just the little buddy that follows Percy around and he’s cool with it
