Jennifer Free takes us on a journey.
One of the things about Performance Art Night that gives me great joy is seeing an artist share a performance art piece for the very first time. That is one reason I am proud to feature a photo from Jennifer Free's first piece as the profile photo for Performance Art Houston. Jennifer's first piece was a visually stunning ritual, she symbolically embodied her own struggle in front of the audience, taking us with her to a place of healing and resolve. Here are a few words from Jennifer about her piece:
This piece was coming from a very personal place for me. I had been dealing with a lot of turmoil, largely in the relationship with my body. I had been through major healing processes, physically, metaphysically, and emotionally the past year previous to the performance. This piece was like the closing of an era for me. While growing and transforming and shedding are an integral part of life, I felt I had gone through a major metamorphosis and milestone in my life. I let go of a lot of pain, and it hurt so bad to let go and remove it from myself. It was a definite grieving process involved with letting go of anger, especially one that had become so integral to daily life. But nothing felt so good to be free of it. Like the removal of the dirty cotton, I separated myself from the things that bound me. All night until the removal I had to figure out how to do simple things like move and use the bathroom. I hid it under a huge trench-coat, not wanting anyone to see. It was like a small reminder of what I personally had to go through for years with my body malfunctioning. I had to learn how to live with the cotton and being careful no one saw it. But of course people did see it, it was impossible to hide. Being physically ill for years makes one very insecure. Your body doesn’t work, you don’t know why, and it’s painful. It’s hard to find something beautiful and useful in something that hurts and doesn’t work. The performance became almost ritualistic for me as a finishing ceremony and closing the door to the past pain. When I stood there almost fully naked, with red raw stripes of paint on the self, I felt the energy of the room move through me. I realized that everyone in the room could connect with what I was doing and in a way releasing and cleaning with me. I was a facilitator for the room, cleansing the raw pure self of everyone in there participating with me. To me that’s what performance art encompasses so beautifully, the active participation of the people whether it be through interaction or viewing, we go on a journey with these people. We grow a bit with each performance.
