cool, beautiful, and textually underutilized.

the guy characterized most forcefully by his liminality: the stopgap in a line of women, bridging the gap between lĂșthien's stab at the cosmos and elwing's saving of it, stuck between fates and unfated himself. something of a teen dad. lived barely and fiercely.
âmine brother was an hairy man, but i am an smooth manâ but itâs elrond talking about elros is this anything
As kind as summer
Elros & Elrond
the conversation about the significance of the peredhel and their parents/progenitors as heroes within the narrative requires, i think, a simultaneous discussion of the (many!) ways in which the legendarium is constructed pretty explicitly against race-mixing, as well as the language and tropes used to frame those "acceptable" inter-ethnic couples, and how these situations in themselves are inseparable from 19th- and 20th-century ideas and neuroses about miscegenation and ethno-racial purity vs. degeneration from which tolkien was absolutely not exempt

From my updated version of my short story FanFic about time travel to Imladris :) I love this part! ------------------------- After leaving Thavriel to rest, Elrond and Arwen discussed their visitor as they walked to rejoin the rest of their household in the hall.
"She's one of those Ring Verse Visitors, isn't she?, Arwen said.Â
Elrond nodded.
"Do you want me to find it this time?", she asked.
"Please," Elrond replied, nodding. They had been through this before.
something so interesting about dior and nimloth choosing to send elwing away with the silmaril rather than their sons in a society that seems to operate primarily by primogeniture (drawing from what we see of the valinorean elves and the early masculinist/patriarchal impulses of imin/tata/enel at cuiviĂ©nen). the setting up of a sort of oppositional matrilinealityâmelianâs protection of doriath, the arrival of the silmaril via lĂșthien, its removal and preservation via elwingâto contrast with the attitude of the sons of fĂ«anor, whose claim on the silmarils hinges on a model of exclusive, indisputable ownership based on the passage of creations from father to son. thereâs something really compelling in how the doriathrin royal family and their descendants engage with heredity: itâs almost always âthe line of lĂșthienâ with an addendum about melian as the root of the family tree rather than beren or thingol, who are almost never granted the same centrality in terms of the movement of power (often supernatural) down the line. itâs thus explicitly acknowledged that although the family includes great male heroes, the capabilities that set them apart are conveyed primarily from and through women (and likewise thereâs much to be said about the association of âmagicâ with femininity, both for good and ill; ursula k. le guin in particular has some great writing about the literary-cultural alignment of mysticism and inchoate power with femininity as a counterpoint to the âenlightened magicâ of men). itâs also necessary to acknowledge the calculus thatâs going on about elwingâs reproductive capacity as opposed to that of her brothersââher presumed future ability to have children, and the physical emergence of those children from her body, deal heavily with a certain variety of nationalism or proto-nationalism that positions women as a kind of litmus test for genealogical purity (even as their families and lines of descent are in the control of men), thus securing heirs to the silmaril whose birthright exists within a similar (but also subverted) framework of heredity to that used by the sons of fĂ«anor, as well as ensuring that the future of the doriathrin line lies very squarely within the provenance of the melian-lĂșthien inheritance paradigm
Back again peredhel-posting (sorry not sorry) because thereâs just so much I wish we knew about peredhilâŠtolkien casually dropped one of the most interesting fantasy races and then left the rest up to interpretationâŠ
to what extent to peredhil retain the features of men if the choose immortality and vice versa?? does it depend on the individual??
do peredhil who choose immortality lose their mannish traits over time?? or do their senses/etc worsen over time like a manâs?
can peredhil develop/inherit allergies or other similar conditions?? do these fade away upon choosing immortality? (or conversely, maybe peredhil who choose mortality donât have to deal with illnesses as a benefit of their elven blood, while peredhil who choose immortality are stuck with them as a result of mannish blood)
on a similar note, does a peredhelâs propensity for contracting illness depend on their choice?? can they even become ill in the first place??
how many other peredhil have there been that were not given the same choice as descendants of luthien?? what determines their mortality (or lack thereof) in that case?
thatâs all I have for right now, but Iâm sure I will add to this!! I wanted to keep a record of all my questions as food for thought to return to when writing fics/etc
