imagine if the whole percy-annabeth relationship dynamic never existed, and it was your manifestation of the relationship you used to have with percy.Â
this is because of a deal that you had to make with some god in order to save his life (lets say in tartarus) where you had to give up your memories of romantic love in order to be set free. percy wanted to do it instead but you insisted because “There’s nobody in this world who deserves love more than you, Percy.”
so you’ve forgotten all your memories with percy but he hasn’t forgotten about you.
at first percy is really really sad and quiet about it all because he doesn’t want to bombard you with information that you’d find hard to believe. it was hard enough trying to get you two away from the enemies dynamic to the love dynamic when you did remember him, so this would be even harder.Â
all your friends find it really sad and try to comfort percy but he doesn’t take it and brushes them off, which isn’t like him.
after a few weeks of long glances, wondering if you’ll notice him, percy decides that the only thing he can do is hope for the best and befriend you. and maybe if he’s lucky, he could make you fall in love with him again. the fact that you don’t have any of the memories you had together and he’s a stranger to you makes it seem almost impossible, but percy is willing to try. even if it means he’ll get really hurt in the end.
he befriends you in the smallest of possible ways. capture the flag, late night swims, long glances around the campfire. you start to develop a connection.
but you start to wonder why everyone looks at you two when you’re together. then they look away when you glare at them and gossip.
it takes pushing but you decide to ask piper if she thinks you and him are weird together, and if that’s what everyone thinks. you already have a hard time dealing with liking someone so if everyone thinks it looks wrong, then it would make you feel insecure. she says they think quite the opposite but doesn’t go into detail.
you ask your friends - leo jason nico etc. they all say the same thing.
one day you push percy to tell you why everyone looks at you two in that way. you push him so hard that he has to admit it all.
“They stare because they know being around you drives me crazy. And they know that you don’t feel the same way I do.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because you can’t.”
“I can’t? What the hell is that supposed to me?”
“You forgot it all. You gave your memories of us away. To save me, at that. And yeah that’s awesome, thanks for saving me, but I didn’t think I could love and hate someone so much in one moment.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I love you. I never stopped. And it hurts because it’s like you never started.”
“I’m here, aren’t I? I’m here.”
and then it all falls into place because you do love him. and although you can’t remember a thing, you know that you’re meant for each other, because you fell right under his charm the same way you were always supposed to.
