"Please James," Alistair sighed wearily, "Just pass it off to Merlin. Let him look into it."

"So he can send Harry, I don't think so." James scoffed, fixing his tie.

Rolling his eyes, Alistair pushed himself further up against the headboard and reached for his cigarettes, "You've seriously have to let go of this ridiculous rivalry." He grunted, lighting up. He inhaled deeply, allowing the thing to ease his rising stress. "Especially as it's all in your head."

"Of course it is, golden boy Hart doesn't need to compete with anyone." James muttered bitterly. "I seriously don't get what everyone sees in him."

"He's a brilliant agent."

James scoffed again, reaching for his waistcoat, "So brilliant he missed a grenade."

"That was twelve years ago, sweetheart. We've all fucked up at some point. "

"We don't all get to swan around like we own the place. "

Setting the cigarette in the ashtray, he flung off the covers and made his way over to his partner. Wrapping his arms around the man's skin waist, he set his jaw on James' shoulder, meeting his eyes in the mirror. "Stay. Please." He whispered softly. "Or at least wait for me to finish my debriefing with Chester and I'll come with you."

"I don't have time. If I'm right, Professor Arnold is in danger."

"I have a bad feeling about this. " he said sternly, holding his lover's gaze.

James smiled tightly and turned on the other man's hold, dragging his fingers through Alistair's sleep ruffled hair. "Go back to bed. I'll be home before you know it. I swear. " Leaning forward, he captured Alistair's mouth in a lazy kiss. "I love you." He said when they parted, and Alistair felt his stomach twist painfully.
