My village had our Perchtenlauf today ❤️ This is my favorite winter tradition.
This tradition predates Christianity in the Alps; it’s something that’s been passed down from our pagan ancestors. Village men dress like Perchten (these goat-like creatures) and parade around to chase away the evil spirits as winter approaches. And they use their dried branches to hit viewers which makes it all the more exciting!

HABERGEISS
The Habergeiss is a nocturnal bird with three legs whose moans and screams announce death in Austria. Every 5 January, the Habergeiss is represented at the annual Perchtenlauf festival where horned beings hit the legs of spectators with birch twigs. Habergeiss becomes a horned goat hobby-horse with a snapping mouth, and is represented by two men, one wearing the horned mask and the other playing the back-quarters of the beast. It gambols about, snapping at passers-by.

Have you heard of the Perchten?
In the alpine regions of Eastern Europe, terror is very much alive throughout the winter season. However, during the Twelve Nights of Christmas, a witch and her minions (children? Cohorts?) wreak havoc through villages. The Perchten, led by Frau Perchta, are very similar to Krampus, and may be the origin of our beloved Holiday Devil.
Some villages hold parades and processions in costumes of these wicked creatures, called Perchtenlaufen! And it does indeed look like a ghoulishly good time!
We wish the Perchten well in their mischief! May they bring good holiday fear to all! 👹🎄❄️
