There’s a really sad cultural thing that’s been going on for generations that seems to be behind the interest “normies” or non-artists have w generative ai. We have created this belief that creativity or artistic skill is a talent gifted to certain ppl from on high, and that without that god-given talent you cannot hope to ever be any good at whatever creative pursuit interests you.
That’s hogwash. These are skills that are learned and practiced. I’m not good at writing bc I’m talented, I’m good at writing bc I’ve always been fascinated by language and words and how they work together and bc children’s picture books motivated me from a very young age to practice creating (and later writing) my own stories. My earliest attempts at this were crap; my earliest attempts at this I was five years old. I got better. That happens if you practice a craft w the intent of improving. And when I read a turn of phrase or a sentence someone else wrote that I find breathtaking, I want to tear it apart and find out how it works so I can do it too. Reading something like that and ascribing it to “talent” means you’re telling yourself that you can’t do that. But you can.
Ppl saying “you have a gift” or “you’re so talented” has always rubbed me the wrong way bc it diminishes the work I’ve put into learning my craft, but I hadn’t really considered what that kind of language does to the ppl saying it. Now that I think abt it, I’m p sure the Venn diagram of ppl who believe being a good artist requires and is a function of “god-given talent” and ppl who believe generative ai is a harmless way for “untalented” ppl to finally be able to make art for themselves is a circle.
watching the show as a bonnie enjoyer is so /head in hands/ because we know really nothing about her and while elena is the main character sure we know so much about both caroline and elena and their hobbies and interests but we know nothing about bonnie's. we don't even really see her room? we see the inside of her house for like. half of a second sporadically but barely spend time there. we know she was a cheerleader, we know that she was a lifeguard with matt once upon a time, but that's about it. there are so many times where bonnie is doing stuff off screen and it's just like. u couldn't do a cut screen for this. even the time where she said being around her dad's side of the family is like watching paint dry there was like no little scenes to connect it with . we didn't even meet her dad until like season 4 and he was only in 7 episodes if that
