Maybe bc Beverly and her dad also seem to be the last of their family since Bev’s mom committed suicide which lead her dad to start drinking and become very controlling and abusive toward Bev. I’ve never read the books but the film decided to imply Beverly’s dad was sexually abusive even though (from what I’ve heard) in the books her dad is only physically/mentally abusive, which aligns more with my headcanons for Penny & Syl.
To me, Sylvester seems like a very old fashioned parent who has a lot of issues but won’t consider therapy bc it isn’t real, is very close minded when it comes to change, and is secretly jealous of his younger relatives, in this case, Penny, for not living in constant misery like he is and strives to break a lot of generational trauma Petunia must’ve carried and live freely as a woman; and so to live with this anger, he’d make comments about her life choices, body, and friends to force her into a box. I’d also imagine him sometimes forcing Penny to give or accept affection because it’d be rude not to. respect your elders all that jazz. Sylvester “Why doesn’t my niece talk to me anymore?” Sneekly. Pennys fortune only worsens his issues and soon he’ll start to view his dear niece as nothing more than a ticket to paradise.
This version in my head is just Mother Gothel and Rapunzel tbh.
On a more happier note, I’ve actually been rewatching some episodes for clips of them acting like a family, and im convinced Perils was an excuse for Syl to make corny dad jokes, infodump about being a physics major, and ignore Penny everytime she mentions getting her dime back, which is mentioned in two different episodes lmao (yes ik the shows episode format is done on purpose for reruns shhhh).
