Dissolve 'unwanted' NUCC, urges Pembela

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28, 2014:

A Muslim non-governmental organisation is demanding Datuk Seri Najib Razak dissolve the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC).

Pertubuhan Pembela-pembela Islam (Pembela) declared that there was no need for the council as the Prime Minister said the Sedition Act would be retained.

In a statement published on isma.web, its chairman. Mohamed Hafiz Mohamed Nordin. said that since its inception, the NUCC has not done any good on its part.

“It has only caused great anxiety and restlessness in society.”

Mohamed claimed that the Bar Council was allowed to present the draft of the National Harmony Bills under NUCC to the Cabinet through the back door.

The NUCC law and policy committee had in its draft, proposed three laws, namely; the Racial and Religious Hate Crimes Bill, the National Harmony and Reconciliation Bill and the National Harmony and Reconciliation Commission Bill.

The three Bills were reported to have been drafted to replace the Sedition Act 1948 and was in the hands of the Attorney-General.

This, Mohamed argued, was a clear act of “desecrating the trust” given to them to take on the task of finding a solution to the issue of national unity.

Mohamed said this was the right time for Najib to “clean up” his administration of any liabilities which might destroy the reputation of the government.

“Convince the entire Muslim community by delivering the promises made.”

NUCC was launched on Nov 25, 2013 by Najib to foster national unity and social cohesion in Malaysian society.

Malay NGOs against proposed harmony bills

GEORGE TOWN, June 10:

A group of Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) is urging the federal government to retain the Sedition Act 1948, have it improvised and reject the three proposed harmony bills.

The group of NGOs who call themselves Pertubuhan  Pembela-pembela Islam (Pembela) said the three proposed bills were against Islam and if implemented would result in chaos and unrest in Malaysia.

“All these three bills contain elements of “Islamophobia extremism” which translate into being anti-Malay and anti-Islam,” said Pembela chairman Mohamed Hafiz Mohamed Nordin in a press conference earlier today.

He added that the Malay-Muslim NGOs have always been labelled as extremists by non-Muslim groups especially by those who are behind the drafting of the three bills so it is only right to reciprocate by calling these non-Muslim groups as “Islamophobia extremists”.

“The way these three bills are drafted by a small group of people in the working committee of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) is worrying and against how bills are conventionally drafted,” claimed Mohamed Hafiz.

He claimed that the draft bills were drafted by only three people and that the bills did not undergo proper consultation or detailed discussions between relevant parties before it was handed over to the Minister in Prime Minister’s department, Nancy Shukri.

The NUCC had proposed three bills — Racial and Religious Hate Crimes Bill, National Harmony and Reconciliation Bill and National Harmony and Reconciliation Commission Bill — to replace the Sedition Act but it is still at the public consultation stage where the public can submit their feedback on the bills to NUCC.

Mohamed Hafiz also expressed concern on the contents of the three bills which he claimed contained anti-Malay and anti-Islam elements.

“These proposed bills that were presented by way of promoting unity but in actual fact, these bills will only cause a deeper rift between races and religion in the country especially in emphasising on equality without taking into consideration the “positive discrimination” principles,” he said.

He claimed the draft bills also tried to incite hatred and anti-Malay sentiments by labelling the Malay and bumiputera special rights under the federal constitution with words such as “discrimination” and “racial superiority”.

He said all three draft bills also set aside the sovereignty of the state religion and the sovereignty of the country and the rulers.

“We also do not agree to the formation of an ‘unfair discrimination tribunal’ under the bills which we believe is a move to revive the Interfaith Commission in another name,” he said.

He then extolled the benefits of retaining the Sedition Act which he said has protected the country’s foundation especially in ensuring Article 153, 152, 181 and Part III of the Federal Constitution are protected.

“Article 153, 152, 181 and Part III of the Federal Constitution are what the non-residents agreed to in order to become a citizen of Malaya then so to go against agreement after so long can only be interpreted as a deliberate action to undo the agreement that was long agreed upon,” he said.

Article 153 refers to the special position of the Malays and bumiputeras in Malaysia, 152 refers to Malay as the national language, 181 refers to the sovereignty of the rulers while Part III refers to the conditions for citizenship in the country.

“If they were to repeal the Sedition Act, it will create chaos and havoc as the basics that formed the unity and harmony of the country will be attacked by irresponsible parties,” he said.

Mohamed Hafiz, who was accompanied by members from other Muslim NGOs, said a meeting with the Prime Minister to submit their objections against the repealing of the Sedition Act and the proposed harmony bills is in the pipeline.

“We are already living in harmony now, there is no need for these so-called harmony bills. We want to know what is the NUCC’s motive in proposing these bills,” he said.

A president of another Muslim NGO, Ismail Mina Ahmad said there is no place for such liberal bills to be implemented in the country.
