Look at the size of these cysts! 😳 Daisy had a successful surgery today at @medicalcenterforbirds performed by Dr. Galusha. Not only did she have some yolk peritonitis, but she had MANY very large ovarian cysts… some as big as apricots in this sweet little duck! Dr. Baden called during surgery and said Dr. Galusha the anesthesiologist were becoming a little concerned about continuing with another 1.5 he surgery to remove rest of the oviduct that had adhered to the body cavity as Daisy’s heart rate was dropping. Even though this means she may have to have a second surgery later, we chose to wake her up and allow her to recover because keeping her under that much longer was just too risky. Sometimes these decisions are difficult, but we always put quality of life first and figure out funding to make it happen later. It is what we would want done for us in this situation and after all, isn’t that the definition of anti-speciesism? All of the masses you see in the photo are cysts except for the air sac in the upper right part of the photo (ducks and geese have multiple air sacs to aid their respiratory system and help with buoyancy). She had so many that the ultrasound couldn’t even pick up organs through them! It’s take two for Daisy’s surgery at @medicalcenterforbirds today! She’s has yolk peritonitis and is having a major surgery to remove her impacted and infected oviduct. On the first surgery attempt on Wednesday she was vomiting during anesthesia and they had to stop. Here’s hoping it goes much better today!
