Time flies, Ryuji thought as he stuffed his bag with blankets. Discovering the cognitive world felt like minutes ago, like running those laps with his teammates around the school like he used to. Those days when nobody hated him and he was still full of potential felt like such a long time ago, though. It’s funny, how the good and bad separate in his mind like that.
He still remembers that sharp fullness in his lungs after his runs, remembers bonding with his friends over the sound of shoes slapping pavement and breaths of adrenaline. He can just barely grasp that feeling before the memories of betrayal and fear and anger replace them.
He can’t think about that right now. He can’t think about losing the thing he used to love when he’s losing the thing he loves most now.
Ren Amamiya is leaving for Tokyo in the morning.
It was inevitable. He knew this. They all did. But knowing never seemed to be enough preparation. Knowing didn’t stop the tearful goodbyes from his friends. Knowing didn’t stop Ren from leaving, from packing his things and opening that creaky Leblanc door and never coming back.
Makoto made Ren promise to come visit. That was the least he could do, she insisted. We need our leader. But what was Ren supposed to do, leave his real family to stay with the one he created? Ryuji couldn’t expect him to do that. He shouldn’t. But there’s a voice deep down inside--call it his rebel spirit--that expects it anyway.
So, he decides he’ll be selfish again. He’ll let himself relive all of those memories. But in some of them, messy curls and expressive eyes staring determinedly over the rims of his glasses overtake the faces of his teammates. Yet, he still yearns for more. Greedily he yearns for more sunlit memories, and the starlit ones, too.
How Ryuji even convinced Ren to get out late enough to see the stars is beyond him, though.
Here he is, however, waiting outside of Leblanc, watching Ren flip the sign before he steps out into the humid night air. Ryuji shifts the bag on his shoulder. It suddenly feels heavier under the weight of their unspoken goodbyes. Ren’s gaze is heavy, too. Ryuji can only hope that his own eyes don’t display his own desperation as he meets Ren’s.
Ren’s eyes seem especially reflective on this night, and Ryuji curses whoever hung the stars in that position and made Ren look at him like that. The light of the streetlamp kisses the tip of Ren’s nose, and Ryuji decided he’d do anything to take that place. Ren is staring at him expectantly, though, so Ryuji leaves his yearning thoughts for another, less important time.
“You ready?” Ryuji grins, mischievous and unwavering, just like he always has. Ren gives that sly, soft smirk, eyes glinting behind his glasses, betraying nothing, as usual. Ryuji almost prefers that right now.
