Katniss’s family has always been incredibly valuable to her and most of them aren’t around anymore. I find it SUPER hard to believe Katniss “I volunteer ” Everdeen would sever of one of her last ties to them if you put a gun to her head, let alone just getting married.

Peeta on the other hand has a pretty bad relationship with his family. His mum was abusive and none of his brothers even pretended to volunteer for him at the reaping. All through the books he’s shown to know what to do to get attention from people, how to silently take care of himself and how to take mistreatment from people to deescalate conflict. Ofc he’d LEAP at the chance to start a new family with the woman he loves most in the world.

Peeta gives her the bread even though it only gives him pain. Katniss accepts the bread and feels bitter that she now 'owes' him in some way that she can't pay back.

Peeta loves Katniss even though she doesn't return it to start, and Katniss feels terrible that she can't return it.
