General Information Aruba is an island in the Caribbean. The original inhabitants of Aruba were the Arawak. In 1499 the island was claimed by Spain, becoming a centre of piracy and smuggling. From 1636 up to autonomy in 1986 Aruba was part of the Netherlands Antilles, with a brief period of British rule during the Napoleonic wars. The Dutch monarch is still the official head of state. The circa 111.600 inhabitants are mostly ethnically mixed, of Arawak/Amerindian, European (mostly Dutch/Spanish), and African heritage. The official languages are Dutch and Papiamentu. The latter is the most commonly spoken language, it’s a creole that evolved from Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish. About three fourths of the population is Roman Catholic. The capital is Oranjestad.

The “wreck diving capital of the Caribbean” Besides being known for its white sandy beaches, Aruba is a popular diving destination due to the two World War II wrecks that can be found off its coast, in between the coral formations: The SS Antilla and the SS Pedernales.

Economy The economy of Aruba is an open system, with tourism currently providing the largest percentage of the country's income. Because of tourism's rapid growth in the last 80 years, related industries like construction have also flourished in Aruba. Other primary industries include oil refining and storage, as well as offshore banking. Despite the island's low rainfall in the past year, the people have proven that Aruba's soil is full of nutrients and many crops do amazingly well in the soil. Many more locals have started participating more in horticulture, permaculture and agriculture. Creating a start to an internal economy.

Dutch citizenship One can becomedutch if has been married to a Dutch national for at least three years and who has been legally resident in the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao or Sint Maarten for an uninterrupted period of at least fifteen years.
