I'm going to start by saying that I really enjoyed this novella, because it's not going to seem like it from the rest of what I have to say, but I promise I did. If you like zombie stories, a healthy dash of camp, and the centering of queer joy and solidarity, you'll enjoy it, too.
As much as I enjoyed it, it's also bringing up some really complicated feelings for me. This might be down to when, exactly, I read it. I started it yesterday while waiting for a couch to be delivered to my condo and while waiting in line at the post office to request the lock on my mailbox be replaced, and finished it today while running on less than five hours of sleep and stewing in the anticipation of a movie night I don't really want to attend. It has me thinking about how disconnected I am from every community I theoretically belong to, and how lonely of a life that is.
I'm sure I'll feel better once I can get some sleep. It's a significant mark in the book's favor that it's got me thinking about all this and feeling complicated things. This is the first work of Dr. Tingle's that I've read and I'm excited for more, another mark in its favor. I'd love to see it adapted for the screen, it would definitely be a fun time.
9/10, really enjoyable despite my brain deciding to get Complicated about it
