During my little vacation from art, I've been thinking about THEM a lot.
My original concept for Hackles and Peartree was for them to be rivals/antagonists for Maxim considering how they work directly for the police while Max is a private investigator and only called on scene when things are a 'bit much'. Sort of the 'Get outta here, SNOOP, this is our jurisdiction.' like in detective shows.
Now they're just a goofy pair of guys keeping their relationship secret from their work life.

It started with me trying to figure out roughly how much HAIR is exactly on Hackles in his human form and it turned into a joke about how his partner is MADE of the substance that they make condoms out of.

Slimes historically are made from a base of a laytex like substance which gives them their stretchy, rubbery, solid form, without it-they'd just be liquids.
I think the funniest thing about my recent brain rot of the two queer 1920s law enforcement guys, Hackles and Peartree, is that Peartree HAS a legal first name. It's William.

Hackles does NOT have a first name, he was never given a proper one since his debute.

So that means either he is embarrassed by his name and never signs it on his paperwork going solely by hackles, it's very hard to pronounce so it's easier for everyone to call him Hackles. Or the saddest option-
Hackles has no legal first name. Since he is a were-pack discard, he didn't grow up with parents or family or support. So nobody ever bothered to give him a name, last or first, because claiming a domestic werewolf in that day and age was seemed 'burdensome' and 'poor investments''.
Hackles is probably the nicest adjective whoever minded him until adulthood called him. 'The one with his Hackles raised.' because he was perpetually angry and snappy even as a child.
