Mining bee on pear blossoms. Many people think honeybees do the heavy lifting for orchard pollination, but in all my days observing pear trees I’ve found honeybees are rarely present. So who takes care of the pears? The native solitary bees, that’s who. They’re great for ecosystems, great for agriculture and great to simply enjoy for no reason other than they’re beautiful and interesting. Cheers to the native bees on this Earth Day.
