Gale says that Peeta’s family “couldn’t wait to inform on them. We know that Mrs Mellark hated the “seam rats” but this is an interesting take. I had assumed that most informants would be people from the seam who needed money but turns out merchants were in on it too.

I like this idea as well because it creates a notable divide between Katniss’ family and community in the hob, full of rebels who hated the Capitol. To merchants more loyal to the Capitol and their own well-being without a community of friends having their back. Maybe Peeta’s brothers being involved creates an inner conflict between his family, especially after his games.

I had always believed that it wasn’t cameras that had tipped off Snow to Katniss and Gale kissing but an informant. The electricity in the gates didn’t work so how could a camera function?

And also it makes more sense that it was someone else who tipped off Thread to Katniss leaving the district. I mean if he had video evidence that Katniss had left the district, he would be legally allowed to punish her. He wouldn’t have to send people to her house to wait for her nor would they have bought her story about Lady the goat, he would’ve taken her in immediately.

Having informants in the district that you know exist would scare people in line much faster than bringing in cameras. Knowing that your neighbors, your family and friends could snitch on you without a second thought would be terrifying.

Like there is so much you could do with this. Like how are they chosen, what is it like from their perspective. Were they around before or after Haymitch’s games? How much are they paid? Were they ever found out? Would they be treated to mob justice if found guilty by the community, especially in the seam?

hot take: i think the tragedy of coriolanus snow isn’t that he never loved lucy gray. i think it’s that he did.

hear me out now, saying “he never cared about lucy gray” is easier to paint him as the heartless villain that he appears to be later on down the line when he was the capitol leader.

what I feel happened was that he did love lucy gray at the start, it is clear as day that he loved her; and he so proved it with many of his actions in both the book and film. he did love her, but then his love became confused with possession and control. lucy gray and coriolanus snow are completely different people— that’s why it didn’t, and wouldn’t work.

snow favoured control and power over love and freedom which is basically everything lucy gray is as a person. she’s unpredictable, desperate for freedom, independent.

snow loved her so much that his love turned into obsession, which grew into an immense fear that lucy, with her desire for freedom, would try and escape him. leave him behind— which she eventually did, which, in my opinion, is why he shot at her.

I personally really like the scene where they’re in the woods and he shoots at her without even knowing for sure if she is trying to escape. she was out of his sight for no more than a second before he opted for his gun. that shows exactly the moment his love had turned into thirst for control over her. he no longer loved her healthily but hungrily. he believed she was his— because he was entitled to her now due to his feelings.

and maybe that’s the irony.

because I believe snow fell in love with lucy gray because of her qualities, and then over time he started resenting her for it.

maybe he was jealous?

somewhere along the way, which I believe is when he shot at her, snow stopped seeing lucy as a person he loved and instead as a person he’s entitled to.

snow is my favourite character of thg series, because of how remotely complex of a character he is. I know he is a bad person, who did bad things, and wanted to continue doing bad things without consequence.

but I don’t believe he was always bad, and that’s what’s most heartbreaking about it.

could lucy gray have changed his outcome if he had chosen her over power?

which is why his character is so much more tragic.

What if her dad’s a Peacekeeper? Mayhaps Maude Ivory fell for one and got pregnant by him.

The ballad she was named for, Maude Clare, is about a woman who gave her past lover gifts at his wedding to a fine English lady, the ideal woman. Meanwhile, Maude Clare’s reputation is ruined by her past affair with the man.

What if Maude Ivory fell in love with a Peacekeeper, but he was “married” to the state, meaning that he could not be with her.

Perhaps she gave him gifts as he left for the district he’d been reassigned to when the head Peacekeeper found out about their affair.

It’s mentioned (I believe in SOTR itself) that sometimes a young lass in 12 will have an affair with a Peacekeeper—and often, a child.

It would also be interesting what with Lenore Dove being so anti-government and all, if her father had worked for the very system she hated until her dying breath.
