Today marks 1 year from the day my family landed in America. After months of fundraising for thousands of dollars to get these girls home, endless confusion and stress of vaccines and vets, sleepless nights, and overwhelming concerns, over a day of traveling later, we all landed in NY. We then spent four hours laying on the floor of JFK while I went back and forth to the rental car terminal and back (without a phone) and covered in dog vomit from hour 1 car ride in Uganda. Nine months before this, I found Ellie half dead in a path and experienced all the ups and lows and life and death of rescuing a litter of puppies and being deceived by local “vets”. I’ve seen these girls grow, from the size of my hand at the other end of a syringe feeding tube into teenage floppy monsters weaving through toddlers on the school playground and to the happy, healthy little girls they are today. They wake us up at 4 some mornings and theyve destroy things I once loved. They cost a lot of money and take a lot of time and patience. But if you asked me what the greatest thing Ive done in life has been, it would be every moment I have been the mother of these girls. Have they been stressful? Yes. But has there ever been a second in my life that I wish I could go back and walk past the kids throwing rocks at the “rat” in the bush instead of turning around and scooping up this little festering ball of Ellie who led me to the rest of her crew? Never once. So here’s to you Ellie, Hazel, and Beans. You are the bravest, most resilient little fighters I know.
