im nearly 6 months on testosterone (via gendercare) and only got on the charing cross waiting list last month, so when i finally get an appointment i will be nearly 2 years on testosterone. is it possible i could get a top surgery referral on the first appointment as i will have been on testosterone for so long?
okay so this sort of relates to my other question: bu do you know of any private surgeons that offer a payment plan for top surgery? to spread the cost out a bit? im trying to look at all my options as going via the nhs route will mean over 2 years until top surgery and i dont think i can wait that long
Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely that you would be able to receive a top surgery referral on your first appointment even though you’ve started testosterone privately and been on it for a long period of time already. Charing Cross works on a process where two clinicians need to be in agreement before they make a surgical referral, and the first appointment is generally used as a “getting to know you” type appointment, rather than one that they make any medical recommendations on the back of.  The only time that this tends to differ is where a person has been referred from Tavistock and Portman youth services and has already completed their assessment there.
A few top surgeons do offer payment plans or medical loans, subject to credit checks etc.  These do change occasionally, so it’s worth contacting the surgeon’s secretaries directly to get up-to-date details.  You wouldn’t be under any obligation to go through with it if you did, so there’s no harm in contacting them.  Miles Berry certainly offers some form of financial arrangement, and I believe Peter Kneeshaw and Andrew Yelland may also have arrangements available through the hospitals that they work out of.
Another option, depending on your financial status, is to approach your bank for a standard loan that you can repay instead. It may be that these work out cheaper than other options, so it’s worth exploring all avenues available to you, although of course always make sure you’re financially able to make repayments regardless of the route that you choose, if any.

hey, i'm curious, do y'all do payment plans? 50+ is a lot of money all in one chunk, esp since a lot of trans people have extremely limited access to funds and can't pay something that big all in one portion. you shouldn't drop your prices because i definitely understand about cost, but if you could do payment plans in the future where a certain amount gets paid off per month, or on a specific date, that would be not only be more accessible but revolutionary for low income trans ppl!
(2/3) - an idea to make them more viable is to not start work on the product until after the payment plan’s been completed, ofc!
(3/3) if you guys made a way to buy credit and have it applied to your account balance, that might also work. it’s just another idea to help with low income trans people, esp disabled trans people who don’t have an income option, too. thank you for reading all three of these!
