Longtime Companion (1990). The emergence and devastation of the AIDS epidemic is chronicled in the lives of several gay men living during the 1980s.
The first wide-release film to be made about the AIDS crisis was no small feat in 1989, and while it's flawed and ultimately a product of its time, it's also a haunting, profound, compassionate look at a community devastated by a disease. Grounded by some brilliant performances, particularly from Bruce Davison (who was rightfully nominated at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor for the role), and a snapshot sort of structure, it's really only let down by its budget and an unfortunately pretty hokey score. Still, one really worth the watch, and one I can't believe I'd never heard of! 7.5/10.

"I Asked for Love" is one of the most emotional pieces from the album Immortal Memory, a work that merges the ethereal voice of Lisa Gerrard with the masterful composition of Patrick Cassidy. The song immerses itself in the mystical and spiritual atmosphere that defines the album, with clear influences from Gregorian chant, Celtic music, and contemporary minimalism.
Gerrard’s performance is hypnotic and transcendent. Her voice, free from conventional language, uses idioglossia—an invented language—to convey pure, universal emotions. Each note resonates like an intimate prayer or an ancestral echo, creating a profound atmosphere of introspection and spiritual connection.
Cassidy’s accompaniment is subtle yet powerful, with sublime orchestral arrangements that enhance the depth of Gerrard’s voice. Delicate strings and ethereal choirs contribute to a sense of serenity and contemplation, wrapping the melody in a soft, meditative melancholy.
I really love the slightly Southern accent Patrick Cassidy gives the Balladeer in the 1991 recording, partially because it gives his voice a bit more character, partially because it feels very "folk singer", and partially because I find the inherent irony of him having a trait that could be seen as foreshadowing to Lee Harvey Oswald in the one recorded production where it didn't happen hilarious
