Every Sunday, the smell of garlic, plantains, and roasted pork filled the air in Isabela, a small town on the coast of Puerto Rico.
In a cozy kitchen painted yellow like the sun, little SofĂa watched her abuela, hands moving quickly but with love.
âToday, we make mofongo,â said Abuela, holding a wooden pilĂłn. âYou smash the green plantains with garlic, oil, and a little bit of magic.â
SofĂa giggled. âMagic?â
âSĂ,â said Abuela. âThe kind that tastes like home.â
As they cooked, her cousins arrived, bringing trays of arroz con gandules and a golden lechĂłn with crispy skin.
Then came pastelĂłn â layers of sweet plantain, meat, and cheese â âlike lasagna,â SofĂa said, âbut better.â
For dessert, they poured coquito into tiny cups. âBut just a sip,â said Abuela, winking. âYouâre still little.â
They ate together under the mango tree, laughing and passing plates, music playing in the background.
