Researchers have developed a new transparent gold nanocoating that harnesses sunlight to heat the lenses of glasses, thereby preventing them from fogging in humid conditions. This coating could potentially also be applied to car windshields.
Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed an ultrathin, gold-based transparent coating that is able to convert sunlight into heat. It can be applied to glass and other surfaces to prevent them from fogging. Applications for the new coating include eyewear, car windshields.
Researchers in the group led by ETH Professors Dimos Poulikakos and Thomas Schutzius point out that their coating is fabricated with methods which are used extensively in manufacturing. In a cleanroom and using vapor deposition under vacuum, minute amounts of gold are deposited onto the surface. ETH Zurich has applied for a patent on the coating.
Absorbing a large proportion of infrared radiation
What's special about the new coating is that it absorbs solar radiation selectively. Half of the energy contained in sunlight resides in the infrared spectrum, the other half in the visible light and UV radiation spectrum. "Our coating absorbs a large proportion of the infrared radiation, which causes it to heat up -- by up to 8 degrees Celsius," explains ETH doctoral student Iwan Hächler, who was a driving force behind the development. It absorbs only a minor fraction of the radiation in the visible range, which is the reason why the coating is transparent.

Fresh out of architecture school, Aaron wanted to test out his belief that with proper orientation and materials, he could build a home, even in the desert, without AC or heating. Land in Joshua Tree was inexpensive and relatively unencumbered by codes so after purchasing a lot, he was without the funds to construct his modern, passive solar design, so he began to build it all alone.
"When I got into it, I knew I was very particular, but I guess I didn't realize how much my expectations differed from typical contractors so I ended up building the whole place myself from driving the dozer, to excavate, to setting up the formwork, pouring the concrete whatever, the cabinetry, the wiring, the everything."
After eight years without contractors, sub-contractors or even daily helpers (except for 2 or 3 days "to lift a heavy beam" or the like), Aaron now owned a modern glass, concrete and stone home that worked with nature and passive solar design principles to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Nearly all glass on the south side, and earth-bermed on the north, inside, the home is constructed with high thermal mass materials (concrete and stone) which trap the sun's heat in winter and hold the night's cool during summer days.
I need rant about how much I hate modern home construction so modern houses (the stupid kind) are lightly built structures made mostly of wood that require HVAC systems that run all the time and said HVAC systems are energy intensive the houses need to be heavily insulated and require the HVAC systems to be on pretty much all the time since they have no passive HVAC since they don't use the old thermal mass strategy thermal mass by the way uses brick, sand, clay or some other material to trap and store heat almost like a capacitor this is the same concept as thermal batteries However there are some good things about modern houses mainly insulation which can increase the efficiency of thermal mass since it reduces heat loss and it means you don't need to have you furnace running all the time or whatever other systems you have.... Ok I have ranted enough

Basic requirement of shelter includes the use of enormous amount of energy for increasing population.Per capita electricity consumption has reached 1010 kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2014-15, compared with 957 kWh in 2013-14 and 914.41 kWh in 2012-13, according to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). India presently has an installed power generation capacity of 281,423MW.The peak power deficit'”shortfall in supply of power when the demand is maximum'”was 5.2% in year 2013-14. Electricity demand in India is very high due to population of 121 crores. Production of electricity is mainly done by fossil fuels. They release gasses and particulates when they burn. Gasses are usually invisible, and include carbon dioxide, which has impacts on the global environment by accelerating global warming. Other gasses, like carbon monoxide, have impacts within the home, by affecting breathing and reducing the oxygen content of the blood. Fossil fuels are depleting at a very fast rate and the production of electricity by them is not eco-friendly.
