goodness gracious, it had been a long night. both of the restless souls traveled endlessly, in need of unwinding, in need of SPEAKING their worries into life. they began when the sun was setting -- a stroll through the rehabilitating robinson park, letting the new life begin their evening. pamela spoke of flowers and trees and her children ; stranger listened. the sky became shades of dead purple, and the scenery, too, exchanged for something duller -- gotham’s apartments, endless rows of houses and small yards and small lives. stranger spoke of dresses and soccer games and his children ; pamela listened. it was past midnight, and they were in the city, all department stores and banks and tall buildings. pamela spoke of pencil skirts and glasses and college, and stranger listened. later it was four AM and stranger murmured of deserts and large crowds and Jesus. pamela intently listened. 6 AM: they arrived back at the house of mystery, their feet tired and souls enlightened. they had left all their words behind in gotham and it was time for rest.
it was the kind of intimacy that was personally theirs, that no one else could have or understand. it was like they’d known each other all their lives, like they’d forever been kindred souls, squashed under the heel of whatever ‘fairness’ was and left for the dead. easily did he welcome her into his arms (who would deny a human heater?), his chin resting on top of her head. a hand came around to press against unruly hair. stranger couldn’t account for her thoughts -- ‘going into other people’s heads is rude, man, don’t do it!’ terry had warned angrily once upon a time -- so he didn’t try to, but for him personally, he felt wholly comforted by the feeling of her figure in his arms; comforted by the hand against her head that confirmed she wasn’t a thing of fiction.
they fell asleep on the almost-constantly unused bed of stranger’s as such, undisturbed of the justice league dark’s bustling morning. the house of mystery was an odd thing; it understood what each individual wanted and twisted to their needs. in regards to judas and pamela, all they wanted was closure. that was what they received for that day, just that day -- lying together in their uniforms, sleeping without their thoughts and only with some kind of dull hope and kinship.
