Truth (An Admission sequel)
He had tried calling the house phone several times during the week but had been unable to get an answer and he was beginning to get worried that something had happened. Portia wouldn’t not answer his calls and he believed that if something was wrong, she would have called him. He had not had a chance to call or visit her last weekend so he would try her again today, she was usually at home on a Saturday, John and Nelson normally went out.
John was not sure how long he had been sitting there staring into space, thinking of Portia, when the phone rang again. It had better not be that Standley guy again.
‘Hello?’ he said when he answered it
Tom was a little taken aback to hear Johns voice but at least someone had finally answered his call. ‘Oh, hi John, it’s Tom.’
‘Oh, hey Tom.’ He recognised her sons voice
The tone of Johns voice was off. ‘I’ve been trying to call all week. Is everything ok?’ Tom asked
John wasn’t sure how to answer that question. He decided not to. Tom was Portias son and it was she that needed to tell him what had happened. ‘Um, you should talk to Portia. I’ll give you the number for the place where she is.’
‘Oh, ok’ Tom was completely confused. Portia wasn’t with John anymore? ‘Are……are you ok John?’
‘Speak to Portia.’ He gave him Susannahs number. ‘I’ll see you Tom’ and he hung up.
Tom pressed the button to hang up and immediately dialled the number John had just given him.
It had been barely half an hour since John had called, Portia had stopped crying, she was sitting out on the front step with Vladamir, smoking a cigarette. She never smoked, she hated it but she had had the sudden urge to right now. Susannah was lost in thought, desperately scrambling to find a way to help her daughter, to make her feel better, when the phone rang again. For a moment, before she answered, she hoped to find Johns voice at the other end of the line again. It wasn’t John.
‘Susannah Nathan.’
Tom was so focused on speaking to Portia that he hadn’t even considered who she might be staying with. Susannah Nathan. As in Portia Nathan. This woman was related to Portia. And it hit him, was this his grandmother?
‘Hello?’ She asked when she was met with silence
‘Oh, um, hi. Would it be possible to speak to Portia please?’ He finally asked.
‘Uh, yes. May I ask who’s calling please?’
‘It’s Tom’ the voice replied.
Susannah felt her blood begin to boil ‘Tom?’ her tone was suddenly aggressive ‘Seriously? You think she wants to speak to YOU Tom Standley!’ She was shouting down the phone now. Portia jumped up from the step and ran inside to her mother, she tried to take the phone away from her but Susannah was having none of it ‘WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, DON’T YOU THINK YOU’VE DONE ENOUGH!’
Tom was feeling several different emotions at once, first of all, if this was his grandmother, she was terrifying, secondly Tom Standley had clearly done something very wrong to illicit such a reaction and thirdly, this woman hadn’t even confirmed who she was speaking with, she had no idea she was screaming at the wrong person, he didn’t know whether to be really pissed or to burst out laughing. She was still yelling at him and he had heard enough.
‘HEY, LADY. THIS IS NOT TOM STANDLEY!’ he yelled back, it was clearly the only way to get her to listen.
Silence fell over the line. He would have given anything to see the look on her face.
‘Ok, I’ll try again. May I please speak to Portia.’ He was a little afraid to say that it was her son calling, he wasn’t sure how much Portia had told her mother about being back in touch with him, if indeed she had told her anything at all.
She had obviously handed the phone to Portia, he just about heard her in the background say ‘It’s Tom. NOT Standley apparently’ and although he didn’t hear Portia say anything, after a couple of seconds he heard Susannah add ‘Oh my god’ and ‘Oh jesus christ’ as she walked away.
Susannah handed the phone to Portia. ‘It’s Tom. NOT Standley apparently’. Her daughter gave her a look that said, well, what other Toms do we know Mom? ‘Oh my god. Oh jesus christ.’ She could not believe that the first conversation she had had with the only grandchild she had, that she had not known about before last year, basically consisted of her screaming at him. Had she called him a bastard? OH MY GOD, SHE HADN’T CALL HIM A BASTARD, OF ALL THINGS, HAD SHE? OH CHRIST!
‘Hi Tom’ Portia said, her tone, like Johns, was one of dejection.
The relief that washed over him at the sound of her voice was wonderful. He had been getting genuinely worried that something terrible had happened.
‘Ugh, Portia. Are you ok? I’ve been trying to call you all week and no answer and then today, I called the house and John told me I needed to speak to you. I was getting worried.’
To his horror, she began to cry, she was trying to speak to him but he couldn’t understand half of what she was saying, ‘I’m sorry………….haven’t called………’ was about all he could make out.
‘Tom?’ the angry woman, Susannah was back on the line, her voice much calmer and friendlier than before ‘Tom, I’m so sorry for the way I talked to you just now, I thought……you were someone else.’
‘I got that’ and he smiled, he respected the fact that she had apologized so quickly. ‘What’s going on?’
‘Maybe you should come to the house, you shouldn’t hear this over the phone.’ She gave him the address.
‘I’ll be there as soon as I can, I was going to go see Portia today anyway. I’ll see you soon.’ He hung up.
‘Something’s wrong with Portia’ he said to Lydia. His girlfriend immediately stood up and grabbed her coat. He looked at her, ‘You don’t have to co….’
‘I’m coming with you.’ She cut him off. There was no way she was letting him go on his own and besides, she really liked Portia and was just as concerned.
Within minutes, they were on their way.
