âI can still see the other worlds,â Stiles said, lying in bed a few nights later. âGlimpse into them. Feel them.â
Derek raised an eyebrow. âIs that safe?â
âYeah. I think so,â Stiles shrugged. âNo signs of the branching changing.â
âWhat about the worlds we went to? Do they still look bad?â
Stiles closed his eyes. Derek could see his eyes moving under his eyelids.Â
Derek gently stroked his torso as Stiles looked.
âNo,â he said, eyes still closed. âThe branching is weak when we were there and a bit after, but it comes back later. In all of them so far.â
âWhat about that last one? Was Professor Hale right? Was the branching complete there?â
âMostly,â Stiles said. âI think I had more control in that machine thing than they were expecting though. It looks a little less bushy than it should while weâre there. But that was one of the shorter jumps.â
Both of them were silent for a while before Stiles spoke again, twisting and looking up at Derek from where he was lying on his arm. âDo you want to know what happened?â
Stiles shrugged. âAnywhere.â
âI thought with the parallel universes that there was no âone thingâ that happened,â Derek said. âThat after the branching returned there should have been tons of different endings.â
âYeah,â Stiles said. âI mean there are, but for most of them thereâs like a main branch. A trunk. You know? The most likely thing to happen in that world.â
âIn most of them?â Derek said.
âYeah. Some of them, thereâs a ton of things. Like where we were roommates in college together.â Stiles laughed. âA lot of it is me-chaos.â
âI end up with a bunch of different majors in college, and then wander around in my career in a lot of them.â
âBy yourself?â Derek frowned.
âNo. Youâre there. You donât seem to mind.â
âI donât,â Derek smirked. âI might even like it.â
Stiles leaned up and kissed Derek. âDo you want to know about what happens after somewhere with a main trunk?â
âIâm guessing nothing interesting happened in that gray world?â Derek said.
âIâd bet thatâs not true,â Stiles said, looking mischievous.
âWhy? The only interesting thing in that world was you.â
âNot entirely wrong,â Stiles said, innocently. âThere-me had a secret. One that he was waiting to tell you. I guess since we canât go back there I can tell you now.âÂ
âDo you know what my job was?â Stiles said.
Derek tried to think back and remember.Â
âI never told you,â Stiles continued. âI didnât want to lie to you. So I tried to avoid saying. Do you remember what your job was there?â
âYeah,â Derek said. âI was like some kind of analyst or something.â
âYep. A testimony analyst. Your job was interpreting when people were telling the truth in interviews.â Stiles made air quotes around the last word.
âYeah. Just corporate mumbo jumbo.â
Stiles eyed him. âDo you really not know?â
âDude,â Stiles said with a huff. âThere-you worked for this evil company that, like, kidnapped important people who had corporate secrets and then tortured them to get them out of them.â
Derek gaped. âReally? How do you know that? Did you already look at what happened there?â
âNo. That was my job there. Finding out.â
âI was, like, a spy.â
âSo you were just using me in that world?â Derek said, slumping a little.
âBabe, no,â Stiles said. âThere-me genuinely liked you. I didnât know you worked at my target, Information Solutions Limited, until there-me already had a crush on you. And then he, there-me, was trying to figure out if there-you was evil or not. And really hoping for not.â
Derek shook his head. âI had no idea.â
âYeah,â Stiles said. âI mean, from what I could gather, they sanitized a lot of information to make it look like it was coming from exit interviews and what not. Compartmentalized things so most of the lower level employees didnât see enough to see the whole picture. Before we jumped, my objective was to develop you into an intelligence asset.â
âWhat does that even mean?â
âIt means I was trying to get you to spy on ISL.â Stiles had a wild look in his eyes. âHelp me take them down.â
âI donât know. Let me see.â Stiles closed his eyes. His breaths were deep and steady. His eyes fluttering. âOkay,â he finally said. âI can see it.â
âSo did you tell me?â Derek asked. âHow? What did you say?â
âI ask you first. If you know what ISL really does. You donât believe it. And then you do. And you panic and run out of the park weâre in back to the main street. You throw up. You run so fast though, that it takes me a second to catch up to you. I tell you to breathe. You yell âHow can I breathe after,â and then you whisper, âthat.â Itâs not hard to convince you to help, but you keep trying to tell me that you canât. That you donât have the skills,â Stiles opened his eyes to look at Derek, âthat youâre not a spy,â and then closed his eyes again. âI confess to you about how in love with you Iâve been and how much I believe in you, itâs very emotional and sweet. And then you start spying and we start sleeping together. And most of the time you manage to get the proof we need. In some threads you get caught.â
Derekâs eyebrows shot up. âI get caught?â
âYeah. And then taken into interrogation yourself,â Stiles said. âBut almost all of the time, weâre able to track you down and in the process find even more proof against them.â
âAlmost all of the time?â
Stiles opened his eyes. âYeah. I mean. The multiverse is messy. In all of these stories there are branches where one or both of us die while weâre fighting for one thing or another.â Stiles shrugged. âIn all of them we die eventually.â
âYeah,â Derek said. Of course he knew that, but it felt taboo to hear Stiles say it out loud. âWhat about where you were pregnant?â
Derek closed his own eyes to remember it while Stiles searched. Derek was happy there. His brain wasnât working right at all, while he was in a constant fog between being high on the thought of having a brood of children with Stiles and the anxiety of making sure Stiles was safe and happy and well provided for, but he was deeply happy.
âWe have the triplets,â Stiles said. âI have the triplets,â he amended. âI do all the work, and although you try your best to be helpful you are very not helpful. Until they come. Then youâre the best. Youâre an excellent dad.â
Derek felt warm. âWhat do we name them?â
âYou insist on naming the girls Laura and Cora.â
âThat makes sense. Do we name our son Derek then?â
âNo,â Stiles said. âEli. You insist on that one too. It takes me a long time to get you to explain it to me. Why Eli. You eventually tell me that you wanted to name him after me, but that you knew that MieczysĆaw wasnât gonna happen, and even though Iâm the love of your life in all these different universes, you insist that Stiles isnât a real name.â Stiles shot Derek a look. âBut you take off the âSâs and the âTâ, and put it backwards and you get E-L-I. I blame you coming down from the brain fog.â
âYeah, well, you would,â Stiles said, but he twisted around so he could kiss Derek.Â
âWhat do you want to see happen after we left?â Derek asked after they distracted each other for a while, and were lying on their backs again.Â
âI want to know what it was like when I told Scott,â Stiles said. âWhen we were in the band together.â
âYou donât think heâd be happy for us?â Derek said.
âThere-me didnât. I found it.â
Derek hadnât realized Stiles had already been looking for it. Stiles didnât say anything for a while, and the longer Stiles didnât say anything the more nervous Derek became.
âWell?â he finally asked. âWas it that bad?â
âNo,â Stiles said. âIt was. Iâ It didnât go how I was expecting.â
âHow did it go then?â
âWellâŠâ Stiles started. âDonât get mad at me, okay?â
âStiles, weâre not them. Weâre not responsible for anything they did after we left.â
âYeah. Good point. Okay.â Stiles sighed. âSeriously though. Remember that.â
âYeah,â Derek huffed. âI get it.â
âOkay. Well. I tell him. And then he kind of goes in shock. And then he starts talking about how hot that is.â
âSo he was supportive,â Derek said.
âWell,â Stiles hedged. âThen he told me that if we ever wanted to have a threesome heâd be totally down.â
Derek felt his face flush. âHe did?â
âYup. And then I told you. And you told me that would be hot and I got mad at you.â
âYeah. I mean I was curious about it too, and worried that you would feel weird about it when I told you, but then when I told you and you werenât weird about it, I kind of freaked out because I didnât expect that.â
âStiles,â Derek said. âPlease donât take this the wrong way, and please remember that you are the love of my life in every universe. Okay?â
Stiles narrowed his eyes. âOkayâŠ?â
âIn most universes weâve been to, dating you is kind of like dating Scott too. Half the time you guys are weirdly codependent.â
âItâs not weird,â Stiles said, crossing his arms.
Derek cocked an eyebrow. âItâs a little weird. Besides, you canât blame there-me for wanting in on what you two have.â
âYeah,â Stiles sighed. âThatâs pretty much what there-you says too.â
âSo did we stop fighting eventually?â
âOh yeah. And then we have a threesome with Scott, and itâs a lot of fun, and we kind of date him together for a few years before he breaks up with us.â
Derek gaped. âReally?â
âYeah,â Stiles shrugged.
âWhy would he break up with us?â
âOkay, well he doesnât in every universe, but he does, like, most of the time, and thereâs not really a main reason. Different ones across different universes.â
âWow,â Derek said. âAre you still friends afterward?â
âYeah. And then after he breaks up with us, he usually tells me that he always knew you and I were sneaking around dating, and that he wanted to let me tell him on my own time. And that he and Kira dated in secret for like two months at one point. And sometimes they get back together in the end.â
âWow. Thatâs kind of cool.â
âAll of it. Especially us being stable enough to date someone else together. And to be in a band together all at the same time.â Derek shrugged. âThat all that worked and it didnât get messy.â
âOh.â Stiles laughed. âIt definitely got messy, but it looks like we had fun anyway.â
Derek thought for a moment. âWhat happened with the B Team?â
âWe didnât get together with Scott there, if thatâs what youâre asking,â Stiles said with a wink.
âI donât have to look,â Stiles said. âHe was obviously in love with Allison in that world.â
Derek leveled a look at Stiles. âLook.â
âWhat do you want to know?â
âDid we get married?â
âThatâs what you want to know?â Stiles scoffed.
Stiles cocked an eyebrow. âDo you think we wouldnât have?â
âNo,â Derek said. âI just want to hear about it.â
Stiles smiled and closed his eyes, found that universe, and told Derek about their weddings. They had two. A large public one as Cam-Million and Stopwatch, where the rest of the B Team came in wedding versions of their superhero costumes, and then a much smaller private wedding as their secret identities, Cameron and Justin. Along with that universeâs versions of Scott, Allison, and Lydia.Â
âHow did Lydiaâs dress look?â Derek asked.
âProbably the private one?âÂ
âAmazing,â Stiles said. âItâs this black floor-length gown with an asymmetrical neckline that drapes over one shoulder. Sheâs covered in clear gems. Sheâs totally radiant. Why do you ask?â
âShe told me there that she could see it. See that we would get married. Said that she wore an amazing dress,â Derek said. âDo you think thereâs anywhere we donât get married?â
âOh,â Derek said. âWhere?â
âIn the circus world. We live off the grid there. Even if guys can get married in that world, I canât see there-us going into a courthouse and letting the law have anything to say about what we mean to each other.â
âThatâs kind of nice too,â Derek said. âKind of beautiful.â
âYeah,â Stiles hummed. âI think so too.â
