Finally had the ‘this is why Mr. G is the way he is’ talk with my mother. It went better than expected, especially the part when I mentioned that I think given the evidence presented that it comes from our side of the family. She was surprisingly supportive of me getting tested for the purpose of warning the sibs just in case this is something they might have to deal with too.
On a side note: having Mr. G is not the worst thing in the world that could happen to a person, and I am in no way saying that the possibility of having a kid like him would automatically make my brothers or sister change their mind about having their own kids.
But!
Genetics are a tricky thing, and the actual list of what could have been wrong with Mr. G just in terms of physical defects (severe heart and skull problems) was rather daunting. I felt we really dodged a bullet! So...I want to do the right thing and give the sibs as much info as possible so they can make the best decisions for them. I’m still worried that when this conversation comes up with them, it’s not going to go well.
Sometimes, I really hate being the oldest.
