timothee chalamet dunking on ballet and opera for being “irrelevant” as if his literal own mother wasn’t a professional dancer for one of the biggest ballet companies ever... as a ballet dancer myself who’s been in the industry for over a decade we ARE a dying art form not because we’re “irrelevant” but because struggling artists exist everywhere. the studios are poor and theatre is at just as much of a risk. writers and painters and actors and dancers and singers and any other kind of artists need to have each others backs in a world where human connection is dying and ai slop is being pushed by big corps. this is your reminder to GO to the opera and GO to the ballet and take a trip to the theatre to watch a movie and give thanks to your fanfic writers and pay an artist for a commission because humans were born to create art and that is always valuable

In April 2024, I visited the Palais Garnier in Paris, France. This was my second visit to the Opera Garnier, but my first time going backstage. I was fortunate enough to have two wonderful friends join me on this trip, and together, we were able to afford a private tour. It was a Phan dream come true.
Click below to read all about it.
The tour began in the subscribers' rotunda (Rotonde des Abonnés), where we met our tour guide, William. Over the next 90 minutes, we traveled to places normally out of reach to patrons and visitors.
We walked past the guided and self guided tours and entered the infamous Box 5 as confused tourists looked on with some curiosity (and maybe a bit of envy. We sat in Box 5 and took in the view of the auditorium from that legendary spot. We sat in the auditorium while other tourists were confined to the boxes. Seeing the entire auditorium was a bit of a thrill. William, through all of this, offered nonstop facts about bother the historic building, and the legend of the Phantom of the Opera. Having a POTO-themed tour led by a fellow Phan made it that much more interesting and special.
We stood on that famous stage and absorbed the view out into the auditorium. We then wandered back into the Foyer de la Danse. This space historically was a place where wealthy patrons would meet dancers (who would often get exploited and used)...today, it is off limit to the public and is strictly a space for dancers.
We took the lift down to the cellars, where we saw the famous wooden capstans from the late 1800s are still in place. These capstans were used as many of the Opera's stage hands came from Navy and merchant marine backgrounds. Lying against one wall was an old set of counterweights...I recalled how one of those fell through the ceiling and injured several patrons, one fatally, in 1896.
Lastly, we wandered through some of the cellar spaces and ventured down to the Phan holy grail...the famous "lake" beneath the Opera. As most know, the lake is just a giant water tank or cistern, implemented to control the high water table in the area. We were not allowed to climb down the ladder, but our guide turned the lights on, and the water below glowed an almost inviting green. The cistern was mostly full, but was about to be drained for routine maintenance and the fish that apparently reside down there were temporarily relocated. 😂
The tank serves multiple purposes beyond managing the ground water. It also serves as a built-in water supply in cade of fire. It's also the training ground for Parisian firefighter dive teams, who need to be able to maneuver safely in dark spaces. The tour concluded once we returned from the cellars. We thanked William profusely for an exceptionally fun, informative, and phan-friendly experience.
Interested in booking your own exclusive backstage tour of the world's most famous opera house? Good news is that anyone can book in at the link below:
Prepare yourself; the cost is €840 including taxes, and requires a minimum of three people in the group (max five). Get that group of phan friends together and split the cost...I promise, it's the experience of a lifetime. ❤️🇫🇷
(Top photo is from my 2016 visit; the Palais Garnier was undergoing restoration in 2024 in preparation for its 150th anniversary in 2025)

Before I forget, this is a reject piece of my comic.. Love how the background came out.. hate how the character turned out so into my ever growing reject pile But love the background so sharing this one
People losing nuance and "Black/white"-"Person good/bad" thinking is so sad. Timothee Chalamet's quote can be about worrying of the dying art form of ballet and opera. but it can also reveal the implicitly misogynistic and egotistical nature in how he thinks. and that's ok for people to not wanna fuck with that. Timothee's glib remark about how he "lost 14 cents in viewership" drives that point home further, if you're slow. He doesn't view that audience as a high sum in demographic nor monetary value to cause him to "lose" any earnings or public opinion. And I find the irony of this getting large press and negative reaction quite hilarious for that reason alone. (He even admits, he "took shots for no reason". Why are you defending his intention and the meaning of his statement, when he tells you, right there?)
If he cared about the lost respect and interest of artistry, he'd bring attention and awareness to ballet ticket prices, and not make a sardonic comment or paint the choice of his career path with a superiority-view. (people also forget arts in general are not a promised career for most, and recognition is only given to a small percentage of actors who make it (to star in films) in the industry, at large). He wants that Oscar. His speech on wanting to be regarded as great, like trailblazers, from Marlon Brando to Michael Phelps proves that. And that's valid to want to be admired for his work in his field. To me, at least, it's clear he has confused art recognition with his ego-- Doing what he loves for the craft with participating in the craft to reach his end goal. Marty Supreme is uninspired. His performance has been tired since Wonka (and perhaps a 2 year timeframe before that). His characters have been even more one-dimensional since the start of Call Me By Your Name and what came after it.
So many male actors get respected off being "pretentious" and wanting prestigious roles in their come-ups (the reception in his comments made particularly when he made the jump from Hot Summer Nights to CMBYN are a perfect example of this), but that same pretension can no longer be marketable of his image once he's been in this game and role priviledges have been coming to him for a while now. It's no longer regarded as "hungry". He just comes off as arrogant.
He seems to be trying to emulate to mimic greatness. But he's unoriginal.
His comments about preservativing art are fake, as he's dating Kylie Jenner who is both a key player in the manufactured reality TV world, and not creatively gifted, benefiting from both nepotism & capitalistic ventures (very in-line with his very own ability to even be in the entertainment industry and some of the success he was able to afford at the beginning to how it's shaped his connection now). He has never been this deep or insightful guy people regard him as. He seems to even think he's someone that he's not. His own artistic ventures would be a risk and likely unprofitable if he didn't have the privileges he does.
His willing romantic link to a billionaire is regarded as anti-feminism if you call out her fiscal contributions to the plastic surgery industry (and beauty at large), but those same people are defending his choice to irresponsibly put down unrespected work in a female-dominated field for his own, (which is well-known as a male-dominated one). The comments he made and personal thoughts around this subject are giving misogynistic, especially with the context of Kylie Jenner's success in mind (using exploitation of reality tv to level up and artistry being non-existent; his own artistry seems to be a secondary goal for quite a while now with the roles he takes). Also, his relationship has wildly been rumored to be him pulling his teeth on serious commitment and engaging for "fun" long before any online tabloids of them made the rounds, yet people still don't perceive him as a pseudo-intellectual, misogynistic male actor that we've heard of time and time again.
