Craft indepth research - Paper Marbling
Marbling is the process of placing paper or items into a surface design floating in water, create with inks (Heritage Crafts, 2024c). However, the subject that is endangered is the complex skill of creating repeatable patterns (Heritage Crafts, 2024c).
Therefore, this skill may not be suitable for my project because the main problem the craft is facing (Repeatable patterns) require extensive training, therefore a beginners level craft kit or workshops would not improve the endangered status of the craft.
However, Paper Marbling as a whole is facing the problem of the rising costs of raw materials, with marbling designs from India and Malaysia entering the market at lower prices than UK made designs (Heritage Crafts, 2024c). This is lowering the perceived value of the skill as it is seen as something that is done in schools, with the public forgetting that the crafts need certain skills to create hight quality patterns using traditional methods (Heritage Crafts, 2024c).
Therefore, the aspect of perceived value may be something I could explore using kits, social media campaigns or workshops as it is about reminding people about the history behind the skill and how it is created using traditional methods.
