La ansiedad es mi gran enemigo. Y con ella, viene el perfeccionismo. 

Con esos dos gritando en mi cerebro, la mayoría del tiempo es imposible dibujar o pintar. O hacer ni un pequeño pasito adelante en mi trabajo de arte.

Cuando estaba hablando con mi terapeuta, me sugirió decir simplemente “Fuck it.” Que yo debería intentar hacer arte sin pensar en nada. Solo en el acto de creación, no el resultado. 

Lo que pasa, pasa. Y ahora, estoy tratando de abrazar este punto de vista. 

Para hacer esto, empecé con este patito. Es de papel maché (todavía puedes ver un poquito de la plastilina morada que usé como molde), y usé una mezcla de harina de trigo y agua en lugar de pegamento blanco. Después, lo pinté en el estilo de un alebrije. 

Tradicionalmente, los alebrijes son de madera de copal, y la maestría de los artistas es increíble. ¡Busca fotos de los alebrijes de Oaxaca! 

Les pido perdón a los artistas por la irreverencia de mi patito usando su estilo tan bonito. Es solo que los colores y diseños me hacen muy feliz.

Anxiety is my big enemy. And with it, comes perfectionism. 

With both of these yelling in my brain, most of the time it’s impossible to draw or paint. Or take even one tiny step forward with my artwork. 

When I was talking with my therapist, she suggested that I simply say “Fuck it.” That I should try to make art without thinking about anything. Just about the act of creation, not the result. 

Whatever happens, happens. And now, I’m trying to embrace that point of view. 

To do this, I started with this little duck. It’s made of papier mâché (you can still see a little of the purple modeling clay I used as a mold), and I used a mix of flour and water instead of white glue. Afterwards, I painted it in the style of an alebrije. 

Traditionally, alebrijes are made of copal wood, and the artists’ mastery is incredible. Look up photos of Oaxacan alebrijes!
