I just realized, we see a lot of palismen in The Owl House. While they’re mostly scale versions of their respective animals to one another, they don’t have to be (Clover is massive for a bee, after all). Owlbert though is small. Smaller than an owl would be compared to Flapjack’s cardinal or the matching yellow cardinal Dell has. Even Mike Socks, a raven, is larger. Gwendolynms Hawksley is massive.
Eda’s also the younger Clawthorne sister, and by the time she made her palisman palismen and palistrom trees were rarer and rarer. Dell was a professional palisman carver but if Owlbert is small then the implication is that, even in the time between Lilith and Eda making their palismen, a professional carver couldn’t get a large block of palistrom wood.
That makes Waffles, Hunter’s bluejay in the epilogue, so much more meaningful. Because unlike Clover or Emmeline or (presumably) Ghost, Waffles was carved new rather than adopted from a previous owner. Just 4 years after Belos’s reign, Hunter was able to work as a palisman carver and carve a much larger bird palisman for himself, because there was more plentiful wood.
man the palismen make me cry every time
