Birds over Flowers
Kind of a follow up to my recent sketch with a storm rolling in over a flower field already cast in darkness. Flower fields continue to be tricky; I drew the sketch in coloured pencils first then dabbed some paints on and masked a few bits out so I could have some small irregular spots left, since using opaque paints later often clashes with their value. Adding light, vibrant colours over painted backgrounds has often failed me. Maybe it's my paints, who knows. I see this as a typical problem of being mainly a digital artist, being used to fully opaque colours of any chroma and hue - thin yellow lines on black, full chroma cerulean blue in the shadows… I have had some success in "underpainting" small areas with white to get the layering effect of brushing pure paints over it instead of mixing with white.
"Storm over Flowers" - an acrylic landscape sketch on paper. I like storm light a lot and I should include more dramatic light to my landscapes anyway - anything looks awesome with godrays really, even though this one has none -, so here we are. I like the complementary contrast between the flowers; flower fields are wonderful but I am still searching do the best way to include enough detail without losing sight of the forest for the trees. It took me maybe an hour or one and a half to finish this small 30×20cm sketch.
