THE HEAT GUN… I don't even try and remove the masking tape off the paper without warming it up a bit first… #abstractart #abstractartist #heatgun
12 watercolor techniques in one page
Explore 12 Essential Watercolor Techniques in One Page
Exercise to explore different expressions and see what watercolor can do. It's an opportunity to test new paper and watercolor paint, creating a valuable go-to glossary for future illustrations.
Remember, this is an exercise, a practice - embrace the process, without focusing on final artwork results.
Tips:
Note down the paper and watercolor type for reference. Different paper textures provide different results. Understanding the materials is key.
Use an easy-to-peel washi tape to create a 4x3 grid. Use a hairdryer to remove the tape glue for easy peeling when done.
Enjoy.

Unicorn 2017…I’ve come a long way in my technique since 2017 particularly in the area of atmospheric perspective which was written about by Leonardo da Vinci in his Treatise on Painting where he observes that the sky is blue instead of black because the water in the atmosphere turns everything blue in the distance and even though on a bright day a freeway overpass may seem very dark the artist needs to make it bluer so that it recedes which I would do if I painted this again #urbansurreslism #paintingtips #atmosphericperspective #lowbrowpopsurrealists #pdxartist #portlandartist #gregoryhergert (at Southeast Portland, Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc_RJCAPr6n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TIPS ON SPEED PAINTING
I get questions on how to do this kind of speed painting in PS. Here's a few pointers: 1. Find a theme you enjoy. 2. Use the least amount of brushes and use your fav ones. Keep in mind the brush of choice is your weapon! 3. Always use some references and not rely on your memory. Even if you plan to stylize, reference will give it accuracy and functionality for believability. 4. Start painting and enjoy it (smile while you paint). Understand what you are doing and don't be afraid to make mistakes. That's how I learn to strengthen the following painting muscles: readability of silhouettes, consistency of lighting and values, functionality of details and color choices. Remember, if you're just starting to do this, focus on how to make it work first. Then after some time painting several pieces, speed will follow. Here are the PS layers showing the process on my previous cavalry charge post. I used only two oil brushes I bought from Greg Rutkowski and a couple PS basic stock brushes. The less brushes I use, the less i get bogged down and speeds up the process. Again, the key is planning ahead on what theme I wanted to paint and quick research on references for horses, landscape, and uniform. This painting took around two hours. Happy Friday!
