Cataclysmic flooding has left in its wake a bizarre landscape. These Arizona dunes, formed underwater, possess distinctive banding that slow, gradual erosive processes could never have generated. Nor could the ancient petrified trees scattered across this desert have fossilized under the same conditions. Otherwise, the dunes would have more uniform coloration from top to bottom and the trees would have decomposed and broken down as a result of exposure to the elements. These are resounding evidences of rapid sediment deposition. Here in Arizona’s Petrified Forest NP, uniform coloration in the bands of these hardened dunes serves as evidence of rapid sediment deposition. Petrified trees lay at the feet of some of these formations. Though most are still buried, some have shown themselves thanks to subsequent erosion.
