A friction point is anything that is in the way of you doing a task. It’s a small irritation that you feel every time you see an item. It’s an extra click that keeps you from getting into your writing dock. Every point of friction is a possible stopping point, a possible buildup of irritation, or wasted effort on unnecessary action.
These things may be incredibly small, but it’s death by A thousand cuts. Over time, your brain can build them up to be bigger than they are without you even realizing it, or it all builds up as tension in your body, and you wonder why you feel stressed when nothing is wrong. It can stop you from doing things you love. It can make doing basic tasks feel frustrating. You may not even notice the points of friction gone as much as you noticed them being there, but your body notices, your brain notices, so it’s very worth spending your time on.
What I want you to start with:
I want you to walk around your house and identify points of friction. What is an eyesore? What do you interact with in your house that makes you dread it just a little bit every time you have to interact with it? Think about processes: what step in the process do you find the most frustrating?
We’re not looking for solutions yet. We’re just looking for pain points.
Write everything that even mildly frustrates you down, and we are going to take that list and brainstorm.
Brainstorming:
What is it that frustrates you about that point of friction? How can we clear it?
Do you hate doing the dishes? Is it because you’re bored or you don’t like getting your hands wet? Do you need a playlist just for washing dishes? Do you need a pair of gloves? Do you need to shift the work to rinsing the dishes while you’re cooking so you don’t have to scrub so hard?
Do you get incredibly distracted anytime you try to sit down and write your project? Is it because it takes you too many clicks to get to what you’re working on? Are your notes in a different place than your docs? Can you never find the right file because it’s not named correctly? Is it because you get distracted watching something? Could you have an instrumental playlist that you put on even before you start writing? Could you even link it in the same place that you have your stories?
Do you spend too much time seeing things on socials you don’t like? Do you need to block people who always make you feel bad? Block a tag? Stop using a platform? Do you need to unfollow someone that you used to enjoy? Do you really enjoy that thing or is it just what you turn to when you’re bored? Could it be replaced with something else?
Do you find yourself distracted by notifications? Do you need to turn off notifications to apps you get trapped in? Silence social messages or emails to only banner notifications instead of vibration or sound?
Do you always forget deodorant? Could you keep one in your desk? In your purse?
These are examples that I have solved for myself. Some points of friction will be incredibly easy. You just never solved it before because you never thought to solve it. Some points of friction will be hard. Sometimes the first solution won’t work, but by thinking about it actively, a lot of times the solution will come to you unexpectedly.
How to solve?
That will be down to you and what bothered you about it and what the answer to your questions were.
Don’t be afraid to do something untraditional. If you always take off half your clothes on the couch, and you find a dirty pile is growing, there’s no shame in putting a laundry basket there. If you find that you keep clothing that you’re not quite done wearing yet, set a basket somewhere for the ‘not quite dirty clothes’.
If you find yourself losing notes, maybe you need a core place to write them down: a doc on your phone, one notepad. Maybe that doesn’t work for you. Maybe instead you just need to have a set day of the week where you put all your notes in the right place.
All of these starts with identifying points of friction, and instead of ignoring them, asking yourself how you could remove them or make it smoother. Making decisions to clear paths so you don’t have to feel that itch of irritation every time you hit that point of friction.
At first, you probably won’t see a big difference, but over time you’ll probably look back and think… wow, this all feels much easier.
Think of it as decluttering. You're decluttering frustrations out of your life.

Three pain points that tell you it’s time to outsource your Marketing and Communications!
If you own and operate a business that has been successful and is growing, you already know that keeping up with everything is getting more difficult. Let’s face it, you can’t do everything!
If you have reached a point and you know something has to change, here are a few pain points that will help you know when it is time to get help and consider outsourcing your marketing and communications.
Pain Point # 1- Management and personnel decisions are suffering. You can’t be everywhere.
This is usually seen with employee morale being down and high turnover in both employees and customers. Over time, the brand of the company or organization has become inconsistent in how they deliver the services or products they offer or even in what your purpose or values are.
Pain Point # 2- You are adding locations and need more time managing the business, not managing the marketing. Even though you may have been good in the early days of your business handling the marketing and communications, there comes a time that your focus, as the business owner, needs to be placed on actually running and operating the business and not in developing creative or concepts. Yes, it may not be as fun, but the only one who really knows the vision and the way you want your business to run and grow it is you- something has to give.
Pain Point # 3- Your web site, social media, and your employees are not being kept up to date. Managers and employees not knowing changes and updates in pricing, policy or regulation changes, inconsistent postings on social media, broken links and miss-information on your website are usually directly connected to management that is trying to save money by doing everything themselves. This doesn’t send a message to your customers or employees that you are fragile. Instead, it communicates a lack of care and concern and who wants to partner or buy a service or product from a company like that.
In a time where employment rates are low and wages are high, outsourcing your marketing and communications efforts can provide you a better source of bringing consistency to your marketing and communication efforts, internal and external, as well as save you money.

WOMEN’S CAUCUS FOR ART PRESENTS
PAIN POINTS: Bearing Witness in the Present Tense
April 15 – June 15, 2025
Virtual Opening Reception: Sunday, May 18 4:00 PM EST (via Zoom)
What happens when artists speak from the wound?
Pain Points: Bearing Witness in the Present Tense is a compelling online exhibition curated by Allicette Torres (Founder, Revolú Gallery & WCA UN Director/NE Chair) and
Amanda Banks (VP of Special Projects). Featuring works by Women’s Caucus for Art members, the show investigates the raw edge where resistance and resilience meet.
The exhibition brings together responses to the politicized body, environmental trauma, grief, identity, and survival. Each piece is a signal flare—intimate, resonant, and urgent—forming a collective visual archive of our time.
The Women’s Caucus for Art is a United Nations-affiliated NGO committed to advancing women’s voices in the arts. This exhibition is part of our mission to amplify underrepresented narratives and foster artistic dialogue around urgent global issues.
