Lara got depressedโnot about the video. It was because she was actually pregnant. And this? This is the part where sheโs faced with her own stupidity. Her parents wouldnโt handle it well; theyโd disown her. Her sister? Sheโs not there. She was alone. I honestly feel a little bad for Lara, but in the end she kind of deserves it. She was rude, and the main factorโshe was planning to get with my wife. And honestly, I wanted to push this, to deepen the situation, and Nayoung was up for it.
Manon didnโt know about the pregnancy. Lara stayed out of school for over a week. That was strangeโLara usually showed up despite any scandal, but not this time. Nayoung and I came up with a plan. This would either break herโor, who am I kidding, this would totally destroy her.
Manon and Adelรก had been close for some time. Iโm not sure how they got that wayโAdelรก is smart, and Manon isโฆ Manon. But it was perfect. Lara had no idea, so why not play with her, right? Manon and Adelรก were talking by the gate. Nayoung was quick with the camera when Adelรก moved in to hug Manon. It was perfect.
Nayoung was quick. She had this account she used just for trolling peopleโhalf the school had already been her victims. Now it was Laraโs turn. She sent the photo straight to her. Lara saw it. No reply. Just silenceโฆ a silence that felt heavier than any scream.
At first, nothing. No fight back, no smart remark, no pathetic begging. Just silence. But silence is dangerousโit rots, it festers. By the next day, whispers had already spread. Lara didnโt show up to class. By the third, she came back, pale, hollow-eyed, dragging herself like a ghost through the halls.
People stared. Some laughed. Some sneered. The photo did its work. She avoided Manon, avoided everyone, her once sharp tongue gone dull. The slut was crumbling. And me? I watched. I savored it.
Her downfall was slow, ugly, inevitable.
They all knew about the video, but the truth was heavierโher belly wasnโt empty. She carried her mistake with her, every step dragging her deeper into shame. People didnโt need to know, not yet. But she knew. That was enough. She stopped laughing. She stopped talking. Her hands lingered on her stomach whenever she thought no one was watching. Her parents wouldnโt forgive her. Manon wouldnโt care. And Megan? My Megan? She would never look at Lara the same way.
She flinched at whispers, at stares, at silence. She was breaking in slow motion, and I savored every second. She had tried to take what was mine, and now she was cursed to carry her own ruin inside her.
Lara came to me. Of course she did. When people are desperate, they always crawl to the ones they think are safe. And me? I was the sweet one, the quiet one, the one with the mask everyone believed in. She bought into it. She had no choice. She called my name, her voice cracked, trembling, clinging to me like a drowning woman clings to driftwood.
โYoonchaeโฆโ
I turned. I smiled. A soft, kind smileโthe kind that says Iโll listen. Inside, I was laughing. Because I knew what I had doneโฆ and that was enough. She was pregnant. A ruined woman. A burden. No one would ever touch her again.
Disgusting.
โUnnie, are you okay?โ I asked gently, tilting my head like a caring little sister.
Her eyes watered, her lips quivered. โLook, I justโฆ I wanted to apologize. For the things I did before. To you.โ Her voice was small, pathetic.
I kept my sweet smile. โNo, itโs okayโโ
But she cut me off, desperate, clumsy. โI was making fun of youโฆ and I knew you still hated me. For framing you. For blaming you.โ
Her words scratched something raw inside me. My smile dropped like a mask falling off. My eyes darkened. Because I remembered.
The first day I came as a juniorโnew, nervous, barely speaking English. And Lara? She saw weakness. She saw prey. Her and her friends laughed at me, toyed with me, made me follow her like a dog. She forced me to steal the professor's answer sheets, set me up like bait. And when we were caught, she blamed me. Framed me. Suspended me. Destroyed my grades.
She laughed while I drowned. She abandoned me in the fire she lit. And now here she wasโpregnant, ruined, begging. She was a bad unnie.
A parasite. A curse.
And as she spoke, I felt something sharp and delicious twist in me. I leaned closer, smiling just enough to hide the hunger in my eyes.
โItโs okay, unnieโฆ really.โ
But inside, I was already planning how to finish her.
To think that I admired her at first, ew.
A tear slid down Laraโs cheek, and she smiled at me like she believed every word. โThank you,โ she whispered, then let out a broken little chuckle. โYou should get back to class nowโฆ Iโll see you later.โ I bowed once, politely, and walked away. She stayed where she was, rooted to the spot.
In class, I pretended to read. Really, the book on my lap was full of pictures of my lovely Meganโmore schooling for my heart than any lesson here. Her face taught me everything I needed to know.
Then a professor burst into the room, breathless. โA girl just jumped off the balcony,โ he said.
I rolled my eyes, annoyed. Sheโd taken her own life. Part of me feltโฆ impatient. I had been planning to deal with things myself. Less work, I thought. More Megan for me.
Everyone rushed down, panic buzzing through the crowd. Some screamed, some froze. And then there was Meganโmy wifeโstanding there, her face pale, traumatized. But that was fine. She didnโt need to worry. I was here, always here for her. If she ever found out about Laraโs pregnant belly, maybe she wouldโve been the one to push her off the balcony herself.
Manon, though, was a mess. She was on her knees, shaking Laraโs lifeless body, crying, begging her to wake up. Pathetic. Hours crawled by until the ambulance finally came to take Lara away. Manon tried to follow, but Megan grabbed her wrist, held her back. Smart move. If Laraโs parents found out sheโd been with Manon, they wouldโve killed her themselves. After all, Manon was just a delinquent, a frat wannabe, a nobody.
I followed quietly, sticking to the shadows until Megan and Manon stopped by the gate. I hid behind a bush, ears pricked.
[Megan & Manonโs conversation]
โI canโt believe itโฆ I loved her!โ Manon sobbed, her whole body shaking. For once, she actually sounded real. Sheโd loved Lara. Sheโd even dreamed of a family with her, dreamed of changing.
โI know,โ Megan said softly. โLara loved you tooโฆโ
Manon let out a bitter laugh, tears streaking his face. โDonโt be shitty right now. She was way too good for me.โ
Megan sighed, patting her shoulder. โActuallyโฆ Lara paid me. She paid me to walk you to her. She really was into you.โ
[Back to Yoonchaeโs POV]
My eyes widened. My chest tightened. Ohโฆ I was gagged. So it wasnโt love letters Lara was giving Megan. It was money. She was paying her to deliver Manon. Not Meganโs smile, not Meganโs attentionโฆ
Just coins passed hand to hand.
I was, speechless... I was wrong. Yet, I almost felt the guilt crawl through my skin; then I remembered, she deserves it. She was a bully after all. And now, she may or not be in a better place right now.
