In On a Secret || Sam & Kaz
Sam stepped off the bus--she hadn’t paid for it, but that was the beauty of the bus: no one ever noticed--and crossed two blocks over until she could see the outline of Xavier’s Institute in the distance. Quickening her stride, she held tight to her bag and half walked, half jogged into the grounds. Unlike her last stop here, a meeting with Bobby that had seen her sliding drunkenly over a man-made ice fountain--Sam did not sneak in but chose the front entrance. The Professor, as she had learned last time, would have seen her coming from a mile away no matter what she did: sneak did not exist in a place like this. Â
The hospitality was unexpected. Sam followed quietly, keeping her bag close to her body and her eyes down, as she was led to Kaz’ location. She thanked her guide and approached the boy she had only met online. He looked nice enough--his expression as kind as it had been over webcam--and she raised her chin as her confidence returned: if only slightly. “Told you I’d find you,” she said. She smiled. It felt nice to smile; she hadn’t been practicing it lately. “Let’s talk.”
