Eternal Punishment
Woo! Last sorta mainline game out the way and oh my god is it a step up from its first half. Whilst I think I prefer the dynamic of Tatsuya, Maya, Eikichi, Lisa and Yukino, I won't deny that the gang for EP aren't fun. The villain group is still pretty bare-bones in characterisation apart from Tatsuzou, but I think it's still solid. It's definitely a more fitting metaphor for the crawling chaos that everyone's disposable, and keeping Tatsuzou as the main villain rather than a bait-and-switch German leader means we get more of his callous disregard for life. The PSP port transferring over the P2IS protag's name is neat, so I got to pretend LARP that my genderswap (Tatsumi) was still there. I think the big critique of the party is that they're mostly jaded adults with similar outlooks, just different motivations BUT it does mean there's plenty of bickering and infighting. They're a dysfunctional team that comes together to handle a bigger problem. I liked them. Shame that the Lisa/Eikichi stuff was locked behind different routes, but I played both before locking in on Nanjo's for the wider story. Seeing all the forced persona experiments and knowing what came comes next was pretty creepy, and I wish P3'd lent into how horrifying P2EP shows all that. Speaking of, the Tatsuya scenario was fun for the first two bits, but the third went a little off the rails with the Lovecraft and space-dimension stuff. Still cool, but it didn't exactly feel...persona? IDK, Shiori was really fun and it was a downer ending. Nyarly really might be one of the best antagonists and I'm sure our glasses-wearing, wide smiled friend in P5X has nothing to do with him. Overall, story was a massive step up and really felt connected, and improves IS on reflection. I'm sure there's lots of things to notice (like the Time Count being Nyarly) in the first that you can see. Anyway, music! Maya's Theme - A weirdly perfect blend of her upbeat and sad themes from IS, it's not too far either way and feels perfectly neutral for a new universe.
Map I - Just a really chill beat. It's a bit more noir vibes than it's equivalent in P2IS, but that kinda works with the adult/grittier focus. Battle - "It's self defence, there's no problem with that!" Boss Battle - Funky music, all I can think about is how much of a pain that general guy was though. Science Laboratory - I'm a Strega fan, I see bad experiments, I like. Undersea Ruins - Gives DEVA labs energy (I wonder why) and I love the water sounds and chanting. Nekomata Rumor Office - OK so Tamaki totally ditched her fiancee to marry the demon she summoned, right? EX Final Battle - I agree it lacks the 'oomph' factor from the PS version of P2EP, but it still solid. Very P5 vibes... Change Your Way - Weakest credits music of P1/IS/EP but its still solid. Strong message of to stop brooding on the past and move forward. Kinda similar vibes to "Next Chance To Move On" Shiori - Mournful yet reassuring. She was a really fun character for what little we got of her. Additional Battle - It gives beach rock vibes. I don't know how to describe it, but like, 1950s American beach movie. And it works. Additional Boss Battle - I don't like the initial opening, but after that it goes really hard. The Brink Of Death - Oh man, this is why P1 needed a 'classic/remaster' music option like the P2 duology got, because this'd mean nothing if I didn't have the PSP soundtrack. As it was, hearing the OST of the P1 fights was AMAZING I genuinely gasped. Next up is P4D. I'll go back and do SMT:IF... for the Tamaki lore when I feel ready for the horrors of a SNES SMT.
One thing I really appreciate despite the soft-reset that P3 does is how interconnected the stories are. The SEBEC stuff of P1 ends up causing a lot of focus on personas, which ends up crossing over into the horrific things we see done with that sort of research in P2EP and P3. Hell, we sort-of see it with the implications that Akechi was experimented on in P5. The stories become less 'obviously' interconnected, but all the mainline events (1,IS,EP,3,4,DN,P4AU,P4D,5,P5T & P5S) all have little things that link'em all together. It's neat.
