As I'm now almost done(??!? β 1.5 months left) with my first year of grad school, today I finally reached out to a couple of faculty to ask if they would consider being on my master's committee, and their responses could not have been more different.
Person 1 [context: I haven't met this professor since they're outside my department, but I'm familiar with their research]:
"Your work sounds very interesting. Let me know how the master's requirements work in your dept."
[one response from me later:]
"Ok. I see no reason not to be on your committee. Sent from my iPhone"
vs.
Person 2 [context: my regression professor currently. Very straightlaced but also very, very good at communicating complex ideas]:
"You are correct that quantitative faculty are in high demand, and I can't always take things on. However, I'm willing to consider this. Please fill out the attached request form and return it to me. [insert extremely meticulous request form document here]."
I just find it funny. And neither of these styles is problematic for me per se but I am glad that my advisor's communication style is nothing like either one of these, lol.
Anyway, please cross your fingers that my regression professor says yes π My dumb ass cannot afford NOT to have a statistician on my committee.
