As you can imagine being a mum of 4 is quite a busy life. There is always something to do. I’m ashamed to say Reading often gets pushed aside. I mean the big two read to themselves and I read the occasional “that’s not my...” to the little two. But actually sitting down to listen to the big two is hard to find time when they are in the mood and so am I. This half term melody has started reading to me while I’m doing little jobs like preparing breakfast or tidying the playroom. It means she gets to read to me, I get to listen and I can help her with the tricky words. I know it’s not ideal. But it’s what works for us at the moment. How do you fit in reading? #readingtimewiththekids #readingtips #oxfordreadingtree #reading https://www.instagram.com/p/B4MfmuzFNq8/?igshid=1057hzrwivqyj
Oxford Reading Tree... and what it means to me 🌳📖🗝️
In the lecture today, I heard that Oxford Reading Tree (I’ll explain in a sec) is actually the UK’s no.1 reading scheme!
Reading scheme - basically the school books that were leveled and would be sent home in reading groups.
Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) - a reading scheme that was based on... wait for it... The Magic Key!
The Magic Key 🗝️
For those of you who don’t know what The Magic Key is... watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y40FNkAL0qk
I bet you that theme tune will stuck in your head all day now 😂
As a very young child, I watched this show anytime it was on. It was so exciting and offered tonnes of new experiences and situations for the characters.
The books are no different.
❓ Did you know:
The books came before the TV series 😱
The Magic Key [as a reading scheme!] 📖
As soon as I found out that The Magic Key was actually prescribed reading at school, my outlook on reading had shifted completely. I saw it as more of an adventure rather than a homework task.
My family even purchased them because me and my brother’s school only covered a few... and we wanted to read them all!
And here are our favourites (from way back when we were little):
I loved these despite not being a lover of reading so it just goes to show, choose the right reading scheme and you may see some children who struggle to read begin to enjoy it.
Here’s a useful website for teachers / parents: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/oxford-reading-tree-levels/
And they’re pretty easy to purchase if you fancy reading a few... infact, I think I might go dig out my old ones because it might be interesting to view them as a teacher (even though, that’s probably an excuse just to read them again 🤔 😂 )
