In the summer of 2015, we commissioned a project with Ronny Sen. We wanted to bring to the frame, the dignity of women’s lifestage of the thirties.
To say that the thirties are not about being relegated to being mundane, invisible or the feeling that there is nothing to report. This is the lifestage when women come into their own. When women articulate to themselves the kind of life they wish to lead. This is when a woman has some of her most profound experiences.
Ronny photographed a diverse set of women. A former cook who had taken her love for cooking to a new degree, with her own dabba service. A mother and homemaker, who became a grassroot level worker with the Aam Aadmi Party. A management consultant who quit her job to pursue her passion for decoupage, and set up her own art and design studio. And many others. What emerged are portraits of women who are not deifying youth. They are happy where they are. Not clinging on to their former glorious youthful selves. Women who own their age, and in fact are making the most of it.
The black and white portraits in this essay are evocative of a strength that speaks for itself. In their potent silences, self-assured stances and unflinching gazes, we witness women who have experienced a profound transformation.
