as promised, the owlfly (family Ascalaphidae) I found in Singapore!
if you’re familiar with antlions, these work similarly, except instead of building a pit they rely on camouflage to hide from predators and ambush prey. a beautiful combination of lichen-y fringes and wickedly sharp mandibles.
it blended in perfectly with the mossy rope railing, even tucking back its mandibles at a 270° angle so that they lay hidden beneath the head.
it was one of several successful “oh-wait-was-that-a-bug-let’s-go-back-and-check” moments I had, and was glad I doubled back to see it for what it was! my first owlfly, now I’ve got to find an adult, which are dragonfly-like aerial predators

I wanted to lean more into the bug aspect of them, since a dragon didn’t make sense. Plus I felt disconnected from my previous design and thought it looked a bit weird.
I’m now an Owlfly!

I thought I had missed summer owlfly season as I had not seen a single adult all year, but hurricane Debby seems to have brought some much needed moisture to the habitat and this lovely floofball emerged. So glad to see you, boo. 🥹

Did you know that Albardia Furcata is a species of owlfly native to tropical Brazil? It has by far the shortest antennae of any known owlfly in the world and is a big clue in distinguishing this species from other owlflies. That does come with the complication of appearing more like a dragonfly or damselfly but the shape and angle of its wings help with that distinction.
