BE A VOLUNTEER AND EXPERIENCE NEW FRIENDSHIP
International students often complain that they find it difficult to make new friend in a foreign country due to their language differences and cultural clashes. However, nowadays universities accepting overseas students are more cautious about this issue of the cross border students and they are designing inclusive learning in such a way that no student should feel alienated in the class. As a part of their inclusive learning programs, universities encourage overseas students to participate various social and cultural programs organised by the university authorities. However, the students usually show reluctance to participate in such activities as they feel it might hamper their studies. However, this is a complete misconception on the students’ part and they should engage themselves more and more in these kinds of events. Despite increasing social interaction, these events are really a chance for international students to build up friendship with other students, especially those who are coming from countries to study.
Volunteering in one such event brings Joe Samuel and Clara Black together. These two friends met in a management workshop conducted in one of the leading universities in UK. Joe who studies in UK is volunteering in this workshop as an international student studying in the said university, while Clara, who studies in Singapore, has attended this workshop under her university exchange program. Despite belonging to two different cultural backgrounds, Joe and Clara share some common interests in world cinema, music and of course wildlife photography. Since their interests collided, they found it easy to communicate with each other on numerous issues. From Clara, Joe comes to know that there are ample job opportunities available to management pass outs in Singapore as the country’s government is eager to fill up its labour shortage. Thus soon after finishing his studies, Joe headed towards Singapore and build up a promising career over there.
