I saw this butterfly yesterday afternoon. That butterfly is the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele). Their spiritual meaning represents resilience and the patience to survive difficult periods. Because these butterflies hatch in the fall, spend the entire winter resting in the caterpillar stage, and bloom in the spring, their spiritual meaning revolves around trusting divine timing and overcoming obstacles.
Not everything goes as plannedāand thatās perfectly okay. š Life has its twists and turns for a reason. š± Save this reminder for when you need it most. š¬

DEE MY ABSOLUTE FUCKING BELOVED <3
in the process of trying to answer this i remembered how much i love this fic. like, what the fuck. we wrote something so fun and heartfelt and sweet it actually makes me ache a little. i have so many favorite parts ;_; i'm going to be evil and include several.
putting a cut for the homies who don't want a small novel on their dashboard <3 for those interested, you can find voted most likely to run away with you here
first off, from chapter 3:
āWell,ā he says, turning his head a bit on the pillow to look at her, āif it makes you feel any better, I havenāt ever been in a bed with a guy before either.ā
Chrissy laughs again, a real full-body giggle, shaking the mattress gently as she does. After she stops, and after a few beats of silence, she speaks up again.
āWhat about a girl?ā
Fuck.
He scrambles for a joke, the quiet stretching for a moment too long before he comes out with, āYeah, you know, thereās been a couple of nights with Joanie for sure.ā
Chrissy doesnāt laugh, so he glances over again. Her eyes are wide. āJoanie? Iā I didnāt know you were seeing someoneā Iām so sorryāā
She shifts and makes a move to get out of the bed. āWhatā no!ā Eddie reaches out instinctively, grabs her wrist. āChrissy, IāĀ Joanieā you know, likeā myĀ guitar.ā
She turns, freezes, and he drops her hand. In the dimness he thinks he sees her face starting to turn red, but in an instant sheās burrowed under the covers, groaning in embarrassment.
He follows suit a second later, straining to try and see her. He basically canāt, at all.
āAre we hiding?ā Eddie whispers. āListen, Joanie wonāt get jealous. Plusā¦sheās asleep in the chair.ā
i would be so remiss to not include "no bummers" in chapter 5:
āItās weird,ā he says after itās been a few minutes and heās composed enough to look her way again. āI feel likeā itās like itās been so long, you know?ā
Chrissy stares at him, her eyes bloodshot and blank. āUm. What?ā
He starts laughing a little, and then she does too, and it takes a bit to recover from that, but he was trying to say somethingā what was he trying to say? Ohā
āI feel like I havenātā I havenāt seen your, uh, uniform. Forever. But itās only been since Friday?ā
She shifts, fidgeting. āSaturday. āCause, remember, I changed in the car.ā
Eddie nods, the motion feeling incredibly strange. āSears,ā he says, sagely. āBāfore Sears. Rememberā guh. RememberĀ Sears?ā
Chrissy slouches down real low as a car drives by the lot. āI remember Sears,ā she tells him, chin tucked against her chest, eyes shifty still. āOhā remember. Do you remember the camera?ā
āOh my God,ā he says, awed. āTheĀ cameraaaaa.ā
He hasnāt felt like taking pictures in the last day or soā what with all the consecutive bummersā but this feels like a good time.
āNo bummers,ā he tells her, digging the Polaroid out from where itās stashed under some Nebraska travel pamphlets. āChrissy, sayā say no bummers.ā
Eddie aims the camera at her, and she throws up a peace sign. āNo bummers,ā she says, eyes overly-wide, like sheās trying to make sure theyāre really open.
In the morning, theyāll probably laugh about how weird the picture is, but for now it feels like a lovely little promise.Ā No bummers, he scrawls in the white space underneath the photo.
there's this scene in chapter 8, which i still laugh at literally Every Time:
To his great relief, Chrissy crawls off of him, patting the back of her head. āMy scrunchie! Iā where is it?ā
And then to his great horror, she drops to the ground to start looking for it.
Eddie scrambles off the bed and moves to help her search, hoping that maybe locating it quickly enough will save them from Chrissy finding the fuckingĀ handcuffs, but like beforeā itās too late. He watches her arm shoot under the bed and drag them out, his face getting hot as he turns away.
āWeird,ā he hears her say behind him. āHey, Eddieā youāre under arrest!ā
He doesnāt really have the space to feel anything but shock as he looks down at his wrist and finds thatā yep. Heās half-cuffed now.
And then, as heās still immobilized, standing there in a stupor, Chrissy closes the other cuff over her own wrist.
He stares at their hands for a few moments and then looks at her. āWhy did you do that?ā
this scene from chapter 12 makes me crazy for real:
"Doā do you just want me to go? Forā justā should I just give you space? IĀ needĀ to know what you want, I need you to tell me, pleaseā"
She opens the bathroom door and he falls sideways, catching himself with an outstretched palm against the black and white tile before he can crash his head into her bare legs. Chrissy looks down at him, the light behind her creating a strange strawberry gold halo. In her hands, she's gotāĀ oh, Jesus.
In one hand sheās holding a pair of pink school scissors, and Eddie suddenly puts it together that the peculiarity of the light around her head is becauseĀ her hair is shorn off, jaggedly chopped just above her shoulders. In the other hand, she has a fistful of hair, and she holds it up likeā like a visual aid for a big important speech, like evidence presented at a trial, the smoking gun which irrefutably proves thatĀ everything is different now.
"I don't want you to go," she says, quiet. Eddie staggers to his feet, still staring. Her eyes are red-rimmed, her face still wet with tears, but she looks almost steely,Ā determined. EverythingĀ isĀ different, and he knew that, but more important is the fact that Chrissy isnāt going toĀ letĀ things go back to how they were.
and then finally. FINALLY. one of my favorite ever scenes we wrote: Chrissy v Jason smackdown in chapter 15 :')
Itās impulsive, and thoughtless, and stupid, but Eddie is pissed as hell now and all practical thoughts of consequences and the like are out the fucking window. HeĀ genuinelyĀ isnāt fully aware of his movements until heās already punching Jason, landing about three blows before some other jock assholeā Andy, probably, because the guy is the fuckingĀ worstā wrenches his arm behind him and nearly lifts him off his feet. Carver moves forward again, but before he can get to Eddie a loudĀ smackĀ rings out, followed by Jasonās shout of pain.
He crumples to the ground, raising a hand to his his right shoulder, and Chrissy stands there behind him holding her math textbook and looking righteously angry. Itās pretty fucking metal, honestly.
god. i loved writing this fic so much, and it's still so special to me. if you read and enjoyed VML, please know how dearly i hold that. especially for those who followed along while Dee and i were writing, you have an incredibly warm place in my heart. the kindness and excitement and support you showed us in each and every chapter remains one of the most special fandom experiences i've ever had <3

Wanting positive experience is a negative experience; accepting negative experience is a positive experience. Itās what the philosopher Alan Watts used to refer to as āthe backwards lawāā the idea that the more you pursue feeling better all the time, the less satisfied you become, as pursuing something only reinforces the fact that you lack it in the first place.
