There are times in non-monogamous relationships where being assured of status or uniqueness is comforting.
“I think you are the most attractive person!” (status)
“I could never have this kind of connection with someone else!” (uniqueness)
Personally, I find it just a little weird to be reassured by status--as if my status is dependent on someone else’s status?  “You’re my favourite!” is endearing, but a little creepy to me?  Like, I understand the sentiment, and even use it sometimes, but I don’t use the value system that goes with such a phrase--I don’t rank people on some universally applicable, consistent scale with total order.Â
Uniqueness in this way is another form of status.  Because when someone says, “I could never have this kind of connection with someone else,” there’s usually an implication of threshold, that “this kind of connection” is thought of as better.
I guess in general I’m unsettled by the notion of being comforted by “outranking” someone/everyone else.  I think I’d prefer to be with someone not because I’m “better than”, but because I “am” (ie: because of qualities I simply and without the need of comparison, have).Â
