talk about your fave chelsea wolfe songs <3
omg thank you chloe!!! best ask ever
my absolute favourite chelsea song is flatlands, because i love the simplicity and beauty of it - just a guitar and a violin and her voice. not to mention there’s very little distortion or reverb (not that i don’t love those effects on her other songs!) so her vocals are unobstructed and you can hear the smokiness and breathiness of her voice which i really enjoy. it still gives me shivers every time i listen to it. it’s also one of her few love songs and it’s so meaningful to me because when i picture my ideal romance, i think of someone visiting the ocean and forests and flower fields with me. i don’t need extravagance nor do i really want it - i just want someone who wants to be with me, so she really grabs me by the heart with this one. also it reminds me of alberta and driving on the highways and being able to see everything for miles because our province is so fucking flat
flame is another fave because once again, it’s a simpler track in terms of instrumentation but there’s a bit more reverb with her voice which suits this song sooo well. it’s another light, heartfelt track and once again her vocals are so breathy and smoldering. i really like listening to this loud in my car because her voice just envelopes me. there’s this one stanza that goes “but we’re gonna run, and we’ll chase the sun, all the way back to the west, where we’re from” - those are some of my favourite chelsea lyrics. love them. love this song. reminds me of alberta again.
my other favourite is iron moon. it has really gorgeous lyrics. as someone who suffers from nightmares frequently, something that really fascinates me about chelsea is the inspiration she draws from her dreams and how she uses such vivid imagery when singing about them and with this song in particular she nails that surreal dreamy feeling we all know. the distortion and heavy guitar are perfect for this song in that sense. near the end there’s this part before she sings the last chorus that’s just fuzzy screeching distortion and i love it.
off of abyss i really carrion flowers too. what a spooky song. it’s industrial and dark and i feel like it should be used in a horror movie. i also love maw - it gives me the same feel as some of her acoustic songs but much heavier. it’s a graceful, quieter song and i like her echoey operatic background vocals.
halfsleeper and her cover of echo are sooo good as well, they’re like the dark counterparts to songs like flatlands and flame. halfsleeper is especially melancholy. when i need to lie on my bed and let sorrow consume me i’ll listen to halfsleeper. this song is pure lamentation, which she does so genuinely in her music.
other songs that are my faves are we hit a wall (that violin!!!!) and spinning centres. also, i instantly loved 16 psyche when i heard it and the lyrics are my absolute favourite part of this song too. she takes a tegan and sara-esque indirect, poetic approach to describing sex by singing “let me wrap you up in these thighs” and i just love it so much. also i’ve been listening to twin fawn a lot (and i shouldn’t because someone leaked it on here ugh) and both have me so excited for hiss spun because i’m really craving an intense guitar-focused rock sound from her.
i truly love all of chelsea wolfe’s music and she really affects me in a significant way, especially with these songs. i think she has something to offer everyone too so i recommend her no matter what your taste in music is. there’s no one like her and i just. love her so much.
